Can't be a juvenile perp in Texas until you're 10.
With the stuff I've seen, I'm honestly surprised there are not more 8 and 9 year old little feral kids doing this

I interviewed for the head football job in Nixon-Smiley probably around 92 or 93. I remember talking to one of the board members who I had an in with through a coaching buddy. He said not to worry about kids failing classes because they pass every kid because all they were going to do when they graduated was work at one of the chicken farms. Didn’t sound like a place for me plus they sucked in all sports. I turned that job down quick.

Most 7 year old's believe in Santa and the tooth fairy.
Another angle no one has mentioned is why would Gramps have a loaded handgun unlocked where a 7 year old could get their hands on it. 7 year olds are known to shoot themselves not understanding what there are really doing.
I keep loaded guns but if a kid comes over to visit I lock that stuff up, and in a room that is also locked.
I have a nephew who at 13 wanted to learn to shoot. I had taught his older brother at that age, however my dude was struggling at the time. Getting into a little trouble at school, acting up, seeing a counselor and all...
I made an intentional choice to keep him away from guns and not teach him. He is 19 now and doing just fine and when he was "better" he got taught.
Those parents up in Michigan both just got 10-15 years in prison for allowing their kid, who had issues, access to a gun and teaching him how to use it... he went and shot up his school.
Gun ownership is a right that comes with great responsibility. Wont stop them all but leaving a loaded gun where a 7 year old can get hands on it, that is a crime IMHO.

I agree, the gun should have been locked up. Now, it says it was in the glove compartment of a vehicle, but whether the vehicle was locked up or not, is unclear. I learned how to shoot at 5 and had a .22 rifle. That was the Christmas of 1980...Wise choice? I would say probably not, but I haven't killed anyone. But a 7 year old that can take a gun, go into a stranger's house, shoot them in the head, then return the gun to it's original location...and do all this without a care in the world and 2 years later threaten to kill a kid? That dude has serious problems and needs to be locked away from society.

From the Texas Penal Code:
Sec. 46.13. MAKING A FIREARM ACCESSIBLE TO A CHILD. (a) In this section:
(1) "Child" means a person younger than 17 years of age.
(2) "Readily dischargeable firearm" means a firearm that is loaded with ammunition, whether or not a round is in the chamber.
(3) "Secure" means to take steps that a reasonable person would take to prevent the access to a readily dischargeable firearm by a child, including but not limited to placing a firearm in a locked container or temporarily rendering the firearm inoperable by a trigger lock or other means.
(b) A person commits an offense if a child gains access to a readily dischargeable firearm and the person with criminal negligence:
(1) failed to secure the firearm; or
(2) left the firearm in a place to which the person knew or should have known the child would gain access.
(c) It is an affirmative defense to prosecution under this section that the child's access to the firearm:
(1) was supervised by a person older than 18 years of age and was for hunting, sporting, or other lawful purposes;
(2) consisted of lawful defense by the child of people or property;
(3) was gained by entering property in violation of this code; or
(4) occurred during a time when the actor was engaged in an agricultural enterprise.
(d) Except as provided by Subsection (e), an offense under this section is a Class C misdemeanor.
(e) An offense under this section is a Class A misdemeanor if the child discharges the firearm and causes death or serious bodily injury to himself or another person.
(f) A peace officer or other person may not arrest the actor before the seventh day after the date on which the offense is committed if:
(1) the actor is a member of the family, as defined by Section 71.003, Family Code, of the child who discharged the firearm; and
(2) the child in discharging the firearm caused the death of or serious injury to the child.
(g) A dealer of firearms shall post in a conspicuous position on the premises where the dealer conducts business a sign that contains the following warning in block letters not less than one inch in height:
"IT IS UNLAWFUL TO STORE, TRANSPORT, OR ABANDON AN UNSECURED FIREARM IN A PLACE WHERE CHILDREN ARE LIKELY TO BE AND CAN OBTAIN ACCESS TO THE FIREARM."
