I’m getting a new to me barely used PA 17T with XI 5 TM (and it’s registered) but I’m not sure if I need a fire extinguisher. I think it’s only required for gas motors but I don’t want to guess wrong. He didn’t have one on the boat.
Thanks in advance!

Interesting question. Logic says no, but "power boat" is a bit ambiguous and could include electric power. This caused me to look at TPDW and it says that you do not need a fire extinguisher if it is: 1) Less than 26', 2) Of open construction, and 3) No permanently mounted gas tank. One could argue that a Hobie is not "open construction" because it does have a hull... however, I think your get-out-of-jail-free card is related to the lack of a gas tank. For this reason, I think its safe to assume that you do not need a fire extinguisher. https://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/...pment/required-safety-equipment-power-16

Agree, you don’t need one.

Thanks! I’m so fired up to fish tomorrow, even in the gales. First “powered” boat. I’ve been fishing kayaks for 21 years.

Awesome boat. I'm a little jealous. I’m a LOT jealous! I had the opportunity to buy one in not-so-great-shape a few years back. I’m still wishing that I hadn’t passed on it. There are lots of great options to put an electric motor on that kayak. Nice. Good for you! JR
