I just got an 05 f-250 powerstroke 4x4 the other day and had a question. you know when you turn the key on a diesel and have to wait a few seconds before you start it, the engine makes a nosie for a few seconds. Well, when I turn my truck off it makes that same sound for about 15-20 seconds also. The guy at the dealership said it was no big deal. Have any of yall had that happen? Thanks

sundown,

That is normal and tells me that it has been serviced at a Ford dealership. It was part of a programming update they did recently. I have my truck serviced at Ford Country in Lewisville and that is what they told me sometime last winter. I have had no problems at all with mine - just keep the filters changed regularly and it should last a long time. I change my oil filter every 3000 miles and the fuel filters (both of them)every other oil change. I take it to the dealer for service about once every third oil change or so for a check-up as well.

Sundownbrown, I have a 07 with the 6.0L when you first turn the key on, the sound you hear is the fuel pump primming itself up, it take a lot of fuel pressure to turn those motors over, the sound that you hear after you shut it off, is bascially the same thing, except it's letting off the pressure, if your fuel pump was to stay under that kind of pressure, then you would literally blow the fuel lines, that are connected to the fuel pump. I dont know if you plan on doing any modifications to your truck, but if you put an Edge Programmer on it, doesnt matter which one, then I would suggest upgrading to a aftermarket fuel pump, that will carry the strain and pressure of those programmers, I learned the hard way. The fuel pump cost me around a 1,000 bucks with labor and all. The fuel pump I replaced was on my 03 with the 7.3L.

I run a superchips programmer on my new 07, and it doesnt change the fuel pressure like the Edge programmers do. I picked up about 3 mpg's with mine and can out run most street cars. woot

If you havent ever owned a diesel before and want to know more about performance, send me a pm.

Rick,

I don't want to highjack this post, but I believe you have answered the original question.

I have a question for you. I would like to chip my 6.0L as well, but have been warned many times not to do that. I was told that I ran the risk of stretching out the head bolts and voiding my warranty. I have a good friend who is a Ford diesel mechanic at a very respctable dealership in the DFW area who has told me this as well. Have you heard of this?

Thanks,
Ron

Yes, and I have also heard a lot of other rumors to, but I have been running performance products on my diesel since day one, and have not had a single problem with any of it, besides how can they say your voiding your warranty when they dont know it's on there, that's the beauty of a programmer, once you put back to the stock setting, it's like it never exsisted in the first place wink ... Exhaust and air intake do not void warranties. I run an aftermarket air intake, which only helps the motor breathe a little better, oversized exhaust which helps it breathe better. If you do any kind of performance work to it, like in programmers, make sure you add an EGT gauge, it will read your Exhaust Gas Temp, if it gets to high it will melt the fan in the turbo. With that said, the fan will also cool twice as fast as it heated up. If you plan on just using it for fuel mileage and the occasional pulling job, it's not as big of a need because for an EGT gauge, you wont have it set on the highest setting, atleast I dont. I leave mine on what my programmer calls the tow mode and usually get additional 75 H.P and 135 ft pounds of torque. I have had no problems with towing or anything. I know this is lengthy but kinda hard to fit into a smaller sentence. If you guys want to know anything else, just howler at me, I am full of a lot of useless diesel information LOL

Rick, thanks for the detailed reply and advice. I have an '03 6.0L and it has never given me any trouble. My desire would be to increase the fuel efficiency. What king of mileage do you get? Mine gets about 14.5 or so just going the short trip back to work and about 16.5 or so on the highway. When I am pulling my boat (Triton TR21), I will get about 16. These are the numbers I calcuated, not what the truck diaplay says.

BTW, my buddy at the Ford Dealership told me it was pretty obvious when a motor comes in leaking oil and having blow-by through the head gaskets that it had been chipped resulting in extended head bolts. He told me this was only a problem on the 6.0, not the 7.3, and that it was too early to tell on the 6.4. I don't know what that means in terms of warranty coverage, but I would think it would certainly raise a question.

Guys not to burst your bubble but 6.0 stock have a problem with blowing head gaskets and stretching head bolts. Why would you turn them up and run the chance of destroying your motor. I personally run a 7.3 and don't have a use for any more power than it has stock. But if you really want to have a fast diesel drop the compression, get a turbo with more boost, turn the fuel up, and but bigger exhuast on it.. The horsepower is only limited by the stuctural strength of the block, heads, bots, and other internal parts.

RB sorry for the late reply, but I am averaging around 20-22 on the highway. I havent checked it pulling my boat. I would assume it's around 17-19 I guess, now pulling my 5th wheel travel trailer is a different story, It's 38ft long and weighs about 14,000lbs and I can set sail around 70 down the interstate and get about 8-10mpg....

My team partner is a diesel ford tech and he has always said to leave the powerstroke stock. He says to just change the stock air and fuel filters often. I would listen to your ford tech buddy and leave your truck stock.

Do you guys have 2wd or 4wd? That's pretty good fuel milage. I have an 03, 6.0 with 4WD and and run a super chips programmer. I keep mine on the "high performance mode" most of the time. I get around 16 mpg on the highway and 13-14 in town. I figure I lose 2 mpg due to the lift and large tires. As far as programmers go, I have friends that are Ford mechanics that also run them in their trucks so I guess it is just a matter of opinion. At 86,000 miles, I have not had one problem with mine.
