It's been a few years since I have fished Lavon and I have always heard about how bad access to many of the boat ramps are. Today I was bored so I thought I would just take a tour around the lake. I visited Twin Groves, Elm Creek, Lakeland and Mallard. First of all the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers should be shame at how they have let those sites go down the drain. The number pot holes and lack of maintenance is beyond ridiculous. I just baffled at how they can just ignore the dispair those ramps are in. Out of those four ramps two of them had no truck/trailers on them at all and the other two had two apiece. It was just shameful. Another thing that really shocked me was the amount of new construction going on. Most these were not starter homes. Not sure were the demand is coming but they are building new homes everywhere along 78. It was clear to me why Lavon has been such a great crappie lake. The amount of buck brush on that lake is crazy. Hopefully the wind dies down and I get a chance to fish it this Thursday. I really hope they invest some money on the parks on Lavon. They really need to do better.

Always launched at tickey creek. It was a good ramp. It’s the ramps/parks way up on the north end and in the creek arms that seem to have been let go.

Little Ridge is usually where I put in most of the time. The 300 yard road leading to the ramp is terrible though. The rest of it is ok. Lavonia is also decent (though there's no courtesy dock). It's bizarre that the COE has let things get out of hand at a lot of the ramps/parks. 78 is a nightmare at rush hour and it's about to get worse with all the new homes going up. I wouldn't want to live there and have to go into Dallas for work.

They are all bad, it’s a shame. And whatever you do don’t call them and complain because they will shut them down and never reopen them.
It has happened to few others of the years, Pebble beach is the one that drives me nuts, it’s always some stupid reason. One year it’s, they can’t open because the bathroom does not work, another year it’s because they can’t find anyone to pick up the trash dumpster, another year it’s because they can’t mow the grass. It’s always something but don’t think they even opened it the last couple years.
This is just one example, there are a few other that never open too.

I was thinking about going out soon to try catching some crappie, but all this info is very discouraging. whoever pays these employees need to cut salaries. sad that whoever's in charge let it get this bad.

So...anyone finding any crappie in all that submerged brush with the lake levels over full pool? Tried a couple weeks ago and could only find eater size blue cats.

The shallow bite has been tough. I've caught some out about 10 feet near the mouths of coves and creeks, but that's been a pretty slow bite as well. Once they quit releasing water, I'd imagine the bite should improve.

Lavon is best about the second week of may-June. It stays steady through summer if you use smaller baits. Spring bite has always been crummy on that lake.

Thanks guys. It's been 20 years since I chased em on Lavon in the shallows. Warmer temps sound right, I think I'll stick to Tawakoni this weekend.

I fished Tawakoni on Thursday and could not catch a crappie because the white bass/yellow bass were all over my jigs. I'm not complaining because they were lots of fun.

I was going to fish Lavon next Friday. In the past I have done well back in the cove at Collin Park Marina. Now I am rethinking that. I normally launch at Lavonia but the dock was out of commission last 2 years. Same with Avalon and Avalon has a fee and you risk your credit getting skimmed using the card reader. It is a shame that one of the best most protected ramps on that lake was privatized by the marina. Talking about East Fork. I have never fished Tawakoni for spring crappie but have been thinking about trying it.
Fished Ray Hubbard Friday and caught 3 males and 3 females shallow. Females full of eggs. Also one nice eating size channel and 2 green trash fish. Bought minnows at Harbor Bay. They are proud of those things. South cove at golf course is full of gar and no crappie. North one is where we caught fish.

This is just one example, there are a few other that never open too. They loved covid, gave them a reason to shut them all down. Most coe lake/parks are normally really nice, look at Pat Mayes. Why Lavon is such a dump I have no idea.
