Today my wife and I got some tough news. Her son was hit by a PU driven by an illegal uninsured driver on Feb 16. His right leg was severely damaged from the pelvis down. Broken pelvis, two fractures above the knee, shattered knee cap, two fractures below the knee. The lowest fracture was a compound fracture. It’s the biggest issue. Lots of skin damage and skin loss. He’s been through over 20 hours of surgery. His whole right leg is pretty much a series of rods, plates and screws. They have been doing everything they can to save his leg.

Today he was in for what they call a flap surgery. They were going to take some muscle from the back of his leg, flip it to the front of the leg and cover it with a thin skin graft. This was to give a chance for the skin to heal so the bone can heal. Unfortunately they found the back of his leg muscle was also dying. They weren’t able to perform the surgery.

At this point the fight to save his lower leg is over. All options are exhausted. They did everything they could but were not able to work the needed miracle. He’s scheduled to have his leg amputated below the knee on Friday morning.

Things could be worse. He should be able to live a fairly normal life. The recovery if they were able to save the leg was 2+ years. It’s about a year or less for the amputation.

Lots of struggles ahead as he adapts. Hopefully he attacks it head on.

It’s been an excruciating month for my wife. She has been strong and amazing through his. It’s something no mother wants to go thru. It’s been difficult being in Tulsa when she lives in Houston and has a job that counts on her. She is obviously pretty exhausted. It’s hard being here Houston and not being able to be there for her. I was up there for 3 days over the weekend and am returning this Friday.
