A Georgia man whose rental property was seized by suspected squatters while he was away taking care of his sick wife is relieved after local law enforcement responded to calls to evict the suspects on Monday, according to a report.

The DeKalb County property's rightful owner, Paul Callins, spoke with Atlanta's WSB-TV last week after at least three people started living in the vacant home and even changed the locks.

One of the squatters had presented a false lease on her phone and had no physical document to offer, according to Callins.

I don’t get it either. I don’t understand why there are squatters rights, they should be thrown in jail. Let them squat there.

My sister lives in a very nice neighborhood and this same thing happened to the owner of the house across the street from hers. Travellers moved in, produced a fake lease, cops couldn't do anything...eviction proceedings took place and a few months later they were evicted. They destroyed and removed the overhead garage door and left it in the yard. New squatters moved in. This is just crazy! Texas needs this law!

How can you not simply toss them for trespassing? make a citizen arest?

I guess laws differ from state to state, but I’ve always thought I would make a good old fashioned “burglary in progress” call to 911 and see if the squatters could prove why they were there.

Well, if they have a fake lease, the cops are gonna go with the lease and let the courts sort it out from what my sister was told by the owner. It's a bit stupid to me. This happening was one of my biggest worries when we had all those empty houses at the lake. I would go over regularly to make certain nobody had broken in and take up residence.

Yup, every state should address squatters as Texas does.
You have to have do several things to keep from getting tossed in Texas. You have to have lived there for years, improved the property and stuff like that.

I also don't understand why they can't remove people for not paying rent. This started getting bad decades ago and the renter has to jumps through a lot of hoops in order to get their deadbeat tenants out.
