I've had both the Merc 250 Fourstroke and the 250 SHO. They're both excellent engines but I prefer the SHO. The Yamaha is better on gas and seems to have more high end power. Additionally, the new SHO's charging abilities is helpful with today's electronics. The SHO is a more proven platform as it has been relatively unchanged for over 10 years.
I love how the Mercury looks, sounds, and it feels like it has stronger mid-range power.
The weakness on the SHO is the prop shaft as they seem bend easily.
Both are great engines but I prefer the Yamaha slightly.

i think the LU failure percentage rate is the same between the 2. Just more mercs on bass boats. Buy whatever you want. Bent prop shafts will destroy a LU in little time.

Mine does get a little squirrelly though. It ain’t for the Cadillac cruisers.

I see a Skeeter on Fork every once in a while; a newer one with a 250 SHO, that blows by me like I'm chained to a stump. I've only got a 200 SHO on a 19.5 footer and most folks running 250 will either be real close to my top end or slightly faster. I figure it's had the Niz Pro thing done to it.
There was a video on You Tube a while back of a guy running a ZX200 nearly identical to mine on the Red River and running GPS speeds from the low to mid 80's; probably had the Niz Pro thing too. I've talked to someone about it that has a 20 foot Skeeter that has done it and even with a 30 inch pitch prop his boat would still limit out on RPM's.
I kicked around the idea of doing it to my boat and taking everything off it and bracket racing it when the SDBA comes to Paris.

It makes most of the power in the mid to upper RPMs. The lower RPMs are not much different. This creates an issue with propping the boat. It just doesn’t have enough power to twist a stiff prop fast enough to jump out of the hole. It’s kinda a dog trying to get on pad. But! When it does…..hang on. The power to weight ratio becomes insane from about 3800-6600 rpm. It will literally make you slide back into the seat. Haha.

You also have to read the rules on the tourney you plan on entering. Some won’t allow boats to have power in excess of its spec decal. Some word the rules to say the MOTOR must not have been rated for more than the sticker<<<in this case, you’re ok. The motor IS still RATED for the horsepower on the cowling…it just makes about 50% more. Some limit HP to 250….so depending on the motor/computer, it may make 250 or less.

It is nice having the flash software and the hardware…this allows you to flash the motor, and back to factory tune whenever you want. The only issue is having multiple props. I have 3 right now. I have a summer prop, winter prop, and a giddyup prop! …a 22, 23, and 26. The 26 is heavily vented to allow the motor to get to 3800 rpm really fast.

The total cost is about $3500….buying the equipment, software, and props.

I actually got to see a Gambler with a 2 stroke Pro XS 250 Merc race at Paris this past year and it kind of stunned me on how slow it was. The boat would only break the finish line beams somewhere in the mid 40 mph range. I think the guy was running a prop pretty much what you'd run on an average bass boat; probably around 25 inches looking at his set up. Bass boats are more set up for top end speed and it was obvious. This boat was probably quite capable of speeds of 80 plus mph, it just takes a lot more than a quarter mile to get there. I think if I were going to drag race a bass boat I'd back down to a prop somewhere in the low 20's to high teens and ventilate it as much as possible.

Ive run SHO's with absolutely zero issues. And drove em like I stole em! I did have a bad experience with a 2018 250 PRO XS, but have had no other issues with Merc's.
Im now running a new 250 Pro XS on my Phoenix, and have only 4 hours on it so far. So Ill need to give it some time to give an honest feedback on it. But so far its runs pretty smooth and has a mean a$$ growl to it!

I put a Mercury on my bass boat since servicing my Yamaha was kind of a pain and the Mercury would just be easier. I am beyond pleased with my Mercury. It has been great.

I just got a recall notice on my (5 hr) Merc. Has to do with the air intake on the cowling needing a screen protector. Some idiot got his fingers stuck in the air intake.
Anyway, I'd be fine with either engine since I've had both.
