I broke a 5" piece off the tip off a Dobyns Champ 703SF. I've heard of people just sticking a new tiptop on, but I'm not sure how well it'll work in this case. There's an eye just 3" down from the new rod tip. I'm sure it'll work, but I wonder how much it'll affect the action. I guess I'm asking if anyone has different ideas on how to make this rod usable. I may just donate it to a youngster. Appreciate any tips .

I would put a new end guide on it and make it a spinnerbait rod.

You can add a tip there but the rod will never be the same. Action changed and my guess is the casting would suck with those eyes so close together. The Dobyns warranty policy is great. Since you have a Champion series you can do a no hassle replacement for $70 + shipping. If you are close to Sulphur Springs you can just swing by the shop and they will swap it out for you and you can save the shipping.

That is interesting. I broke the tip on my Dobyns 734 at the end of last Summer. I wonder if this is a wide ranging issue?

Nope - I currently have about 40 Dobyns rods and the only tip I've broken was on a tree pulling the boat of a out of private lake with a not so nice ramp situation.

Agreed. Send it back with $ to replace it or use it for catfish. It is a Med Fast taper rod and any rod that is not a slow parabolic bend is worthless IMO with any portion of the tip missing

Replace the tip and the last two guides. That way you can improve the spacing.
It won't fish the same but 6'7" and 7'3" is not that big of a deal.
