I purchased a brand new Lowrance 520 and HOPE that I hooked it up properly to module, BUT my gps does not work and it keeps saying module not responding. The directions that came with it were HORRIBLE!!!! I am not sure which of the 3 or 4 connectors on the back that the "module" plugs into! HELP!!

It has to be ran through the nema network. Look at the manual for the nema network and see if that helps. You can give me a call at 281-536-3407 if you still need help I am about to install another one on my boat..

The GPS module not responding error is specific to units that are not recognizing the GPS module. Make sure that the NMEA 2000 power is hooked up. Make sure that the 60 ohm terminator (shorter cable) is plugged in. Make sure that the NMEA 0183 (orange, yellow, blue, and ground) wires are taped individually and not touching. Make sure you have the latest software in the unit. Do a hard reset on the unit. Make sure that you have saved your waypoints before doing this reset. This reset will erase all memory in the unit. Please follow the procedure below. Turn unit OFF. Press and hold the ZOOM IN. Press and hold the ZOOM OUT. Press and hold the POWER KEY. Hold all three keys in until the USA Map appears. This will put the unit in a cold start mode; it may take a few minutes before the unit will lock on.

Thanks to both of you for the information! The part that I am getting wrong I suppose is that I am replacing a non-gps unit with a gps unit. I used the OLD transducer (from an older Lowrance) which plugged in fine and gave me the depth. How I am getting power is unknown. After hooking up the module is when I get "module not responding." So I have a $650 depth finder if I can't figure this mess out. There is no problem in losing my waypoints as I have not even had it work yet to put them in! THAT will be another problem to transfer them in as I did save my waypoints on a piece of paper as well as my office computer.

The most common mistake is not powering the NMEA. While the old, gray connector I'm assuming, transducer will work with the exception of the temp sensor, you have to use the power cable that came with the 520.
There should be two sets of red/black wires on the power cable. One red wire is power for the unit and one is power for the NMEA and should be marked 'NMEA' or 'network'. Both red wires have to be powered and fused separately.
It's also a good idea to wire them through a dedicated switch as I've 'heard' that the NMEA system will pull small amounts of power when the unit is powered down.
Hope this helps.

Guys, thanks for the help, but I are an insurance agent and not worth a darn at reading instructions OR computers or wiring. You say "make sure that the NMEA 0183 (orange, yellow, blue, and ground) wires are taped individually and not touching." Taped individually to WHAT? Do you mean taped off? If they are taped off, then why are they there? They go to WHAT data cable? And where do I get these (1 or 2?) dedicated switches and where do they go? Under the dash to get in the way? Signed VERY FRUSTRATED!

the nmea 0183 cable is there if you wanted to share a gps module with another unit for example. one of the wires is for sending and one is recieving the signal between two units, so if your not hooking up two units in tandem you have no need for the wires and can cap them or tape them off. This is just so they don't end up touching each other and shorting something.
As far as going through a dedicated switch, that just means wiring it into either your master power switch or an accessory switch if you have an available one and not just running wires straight from your unit to the battery. If you do that then the gps will draw power all the time. If its hooked up to a switch you can just turn it off.

ok guys I do not want to highjack anyones thread but I have similar question. I currently have 2 LMS 332 networked and I am about to add a 5200 GPS Only to the network. Am i reading it correctly that all I have to do is add 1 T connector and then a nema cable from the 5200 to the new T connector? Is it really that simple? Thanks Phill

I'm pretty sure thats all you would have to do to get the GPS hooked up - (you might have to do some kind of configuring on your unit since they would be sharing modules i can't really answer that part) Of course you would also have to wire the power cord for your 5200 so the display will be powered. But, I think thats all. I am certainly no expert but I have been learning a little about all this lately as I have gone through some of the similar questions hooking my units up.
-you would only power the unit and just cap the wires for the new nmea2000 power cord and the 0183 wires if it had them - I'm not familiar with the 5200 power cable so I don't know if it has both.

balata9999 Thanks for the info. You bring up wiring the power to the unit and this is where I am getting a little confussed. Lowrance indicates that you do not need to do this.
This is direct from their website:
Never connect an additional power source to a NMEA 2000 bus that is already powered. A NMEA 2000 network should never be connected to more than one power source. If you are attaching a GPS display unit and an LGC-2000 to an already powered NMEA 2000 bus make sure you do not connect the display unit's NMEA 2000 Power cable to another power source.
That is why I asked the question of the ease of installation. All diagrams on the Lowrance website show a single power source and each additional NEMA compatible unit that is added through a T connector is simply connected with a NEMA backbone connector.
Can anyone else way in and help? Thanks, Phill

As stated above there are two sets of power wires in the power cable. One is power for the unit and one is power for the NMEA. Your NMEA is already powered by one of your 332 units so it'll be unnecessary to power it with your 5200. You do have to power the 5200 though with the other set of wires.
Clear as mud??

O.K. I have had a technician complete the wiring of my 520 and it still says GPS MODULE NOT RESPONDING!!!!! He checked voltage, swapped out modules, double-checked to be sure there were none of those "data wires" touching anything and it still does not work! Lowrance, you s__k! (We also did the hard re-set thing and still nothing!)
