I have 2 lake maps and need to know which one to use

One is Lake Insight Pro V16

the other is Navionics South Prem-S Dec 2004

Or do I need to get a new map, and if so which is the best for Texas lakes?

If you have a Lowrance and it’s newer, that 04 card won’t show much. Bastages made the card next to worthless, they wanted to force guys into “upgrading” the card and paying $99 per year. But it should have good detail, if your graph will run it.

There have been annual editions since 2005
S=2005
S2=2006
S3=2007
S4=2008
S5=2009
Each annual edition has more coverage than the previous edition.

S6=2010 and all map cards after that is when the Freshest Data program started. Freshest Data is the capability to update the data as often as you want for the first year. Then you can renew the Freshest Data subscription annually.

It has changed some since Garmin purchased Navionics.

If you have the funds, a new Navionics card will probably be best. Unless you’re fishing a drought lake like Choke, Amistad, Falcon.

Jacksonville is not on the 2005 map card so it won't be on your 2004 map card.

My 2004 map was in my cabinet for 10 years ... and I found the Lake Insight Pro V16 today in a drawer while looking for a micro SD to put the other map on because my new units use the micro SD ... I have been using the map that comes with the units all these years!

Jacksonville is so small I could probably make my own map .... if I was smart enough, but I would also like to have an accurate map of Palestine too.

Have you looked at the online Navionics website, it’ll show you what the map looks like. You’ll know if it looks accurate or not. If you like it, then buy it. The insight pro was just pretty much a copy of what Lowrance built in graphs had pre-installed.

Navionics started using microSD cards in 2010.
The Hotmaps Premium regional map cards were discontinued at the end of 2015 and were replaced by the Navionics+ product.
Navionics has two maps for most locations:
1. Nautical Charts==map data that they purchased from other sources or surveyed by their own survey teams.
2. Sonar Charts==map data that is processed from uploaded unit owner sonar logs--free service.

Jacksonville has both map layers. If you view the actual maps on the Navionics website's Chart Viewer, you can toggle between the two map layers with the circle icon at the bottom left of the page.
The maps on the website are current as of yesterday and what you would have after purchasing and doing an update of the map card.

WOW .... THANKS, yes, that is a lot closer, but it has a few spots wrong/missing ..... I will probably have to get this chip.

I hate to sound like the idiot I am, but can I install this in my HDS12 Carbon or do I have to leave the microSD card in while using it?

Navionics map data is read directly from the card, not loaded to a unit's memory. You cannot make copies of it.

You can also look at the CMap for your lake, Your Unit will do Depth Shading, I would suggest the CMap Reveal, Central Region, You can explore your lake on the link.
