I will be in Key West for 3 days in the middle of January for a work conference. The boss and I are looking to do some fishing out there but I know nothing about the area. Anyone have recommendations? We don't have any preferences outside of having a good time and being on the water.

I believe Iconn is headed that way now. He once lived there and goes back to fish on a regular basis. As Hop said, he would be a good one to ask.

I have fished Key West many times , but never in January.

I have met this Captain , used to fish with his Partner.
It is light tackle fishing , multi species,
you might give him a call.

I’d guess 10,12 years back we spent a week in Key West. For whatever reason the place didn’t blow my dress up. Although we noticed a very large number of men wearing dresses. It was almost like the only straight people were the tourist and I live in Houston, I’ve seen it all.

Wife and I paid a pretty good chunk of money for a one day bonefish trip and other species. Everybody said he was the the best bonefish guide in the keys. He put us on one bunch of bone fish. I got broke off, line on the reel was old as I am. I’d guess it broke at about 4 pounds. Wife couldn’t cast far enough to get into nervous water as our guide called. As soon as I broke off he fired the big motor up and moved. We made a half day with the guy and called it quits. We got to the dock and the guide was looking at me like where’s my tip. I told the flat out, you did a good job of rationing fishing spots. You fired your big motor up and pulled away when we were on fish. You never gave me a chance to retie I let him know I wouldn’t recommend him.

I’d spend my money in Port Aransas before I’d go back to the Keys.

Thanks, Billy

I’d say a bit different. The men wear their dresses quite a bit shorter than they do in Houston. We were driving down the main drag headed for the Condo we rented. As we passed this one building, had a big sign out front that said Gay and Lesbian Welcome Center. With a black guy standing out front waving to people in a short tight black dress. I told my wife, hey babe look that woman has a penis, his pecker was hanging below his dress. I told my wife, this was you and your older brothers idea not mine. I wanted to spend the week at our place at Lake Sam Rayburn, drink beer, bbq and fish all week. But no we spent a ton of money to go to Key West. Some may like the place but way overrated if you ask me.

Thanks, Billy

OP said he’s there for a work conference and just wanted to fish in his off time. He’s not going there for the fishing that’s just a plus while he’s there. That’s how I read it anyway.

If you go again, stay at any of the other islands. The Keys are all laid back fishing villages until you get to Key West. The best way to do the Keys is with your own boat staying at a vacation rental on the water. As far as guides go, unless you know someone, I would suggest booking a guide out of Stock Island over the Key West guides.

The solution to any problem - work, love, money, whatever - is to go fishing, and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be. --John Gierach

A good rule of angling philosophy is not to interfere with another fisherman's ways of being happy, unless you want to be hated.

This is why my dresses have to be about 4 inches below my knees.......
