I fished with Bobby a day on the California Delta. He is pretty intense on fishing the frog. You better make the pinpoint cast. It was a fun day on the water. We caught them flipping which is my worst technique. I had to be at a meeting in Napa the next morning. I quit before he did. He wanted to fish a few more hours at the end of the day. One of two guides I have been with who was disappointed when I had enough and ready to end the day. I could have fished more but a had a drive ahead.

Anyone care to share their setup for froggin? Rod strength and reel ratio? They looked like they were using lighter rod than Iād choose, but they also have great control of where they put the bait. Harder to do that with a pool cue.

Harder to do that with a pool cue. For most of the stuff around DFW and such I go with basically a 7' plus heavy MH or heavy rod with a fast tip. I like a deep that is 7.1 or faster and normally 40lb braid. If I am hitting really thick and heavy cover I go to a heavier rod and 55-65lb braid. Don't automatically go with a broomstick rod and whale rope. You will lose some ability to pinpoint cast abd give tge frog a little extra action. I throw a rod a LOT and the first setup I mentioned covers most of my froggin'.

I primarily use the following for froggin'
7' 2" MH Daiwa Pro Model Daiwa Steez 103 7..1 gear ratio
I've found that this rod has the backbone to horse them out of things and the tip to move the baits how I like.

I have two basic setups for Frogging here in Florida - both Dobyns Champs - a 736 for the slop and a 735 for more open areas. Zillion Type R 8.1 on the 736, Zillion TW 8.5 on the 735. Daiwa Samaria Braid 70 on the slop rod, 55 on the open water rod (open water being a somewhat relative term lol).

I have fished a frog for years. From Sam Rayburn to the Delta in California. I like a 7ā MH w/ 40lb Daiwa J braid. On a Daiwa Procaster 6.3. Tried heavier rods and line. But for pinpoint casting and the pause that is required for a good hook set I have settled on this setup. I love to fish a frog!

I don't use frogs much, as my primary lakes aren't conducive for it. I enjoy throwing them whenever I can though, this was a good watch.

Harder to do that with a pool cue. When I am "walking" a top water frog I use a Dobyns 705 rod, 65# braid and a Lews super duty 8-1 gear ratio reel. When I am "buzzing" a top water frog I use a Dobyns 735 rod, 65# braid and a Lews super duty 8-1 gear ratio reel. Both are a Dobyns Fury , 5 power rod witch gives me plenty strength and they load very well for throwing the frog long distances. I like the shorter rod for walking the frog with the tip pointed toward the water. Very good rod choice for frog fishing especially for the price of the Fury. I love throwing frogs.
