Has anyone seen the 2023 2024 trout stocking schedule?

The kids love it! What an opportunity for them from TPWD.

And for the cormorants that follow the tank trucks from the hatchery to the stocking point! I went to Lake Corpus Christi last year on the published stocking day, and the gate person told me they had stocked two days earlier. I didn't get a bite, but the cormorants were still thick. I putted my skiff all over the Park waters and didn't see any sign of a trout. Kids were bank fishing in the designated cove, but I didn't see any catching trout. Oh, well. It was a nice day, and not cold, considering it was the depth of Winter. I may try again, but I'll try to find out when they're really gonna stock them. Great program. Nice State Park. IslandJim

You gotta remember - they are used to swimming in circles in a plastic lined pond. They continue that for days OR until caught. I see them caught (by the kids) way out in the middle of our city ponds. Most of the ponds here in Denton are silted-in now, so the middle is the deepest and if you think about it? It probably feels like one of those holding ponds to them! Go for the MIDDLE!

Say it ain't so! Birds have learned to read the stocking schedule! At least the educated birds in Denton have?

One gulp is all it takes from these guys.

And the blue heron wait patiently, but possessively, for their turn at whatever blows to shore.

So not only do you have the chance to expose kids to fly fishing for stocker trout, you have the chance to watch a little Animal Kingdom action and teach them about these birds!

Thanks to one of my great Denton OG fly friends for texting me on this!

Had it been legal, and if I could have been sure that my off-the-water ricochets weren’t endangering anybody or anything, I’d have put in a lot of hours on Conroe popping cormorants with my super-accurate rimfire target rifle, back in the day. But it wasn’t legal, and I never could have had any ricochet guarantees, so that never happened. I can remember finding illegal trotlines on the north end of the lake that had the remains of dead cormorants on the hooks when the lake levels dropped.

I forgot to mention an article on the history of trout stocking and a little about Texas stocking. This is a non-pimped link to that story: https://texasflycaster.com/history-of-us-trout-stocking/

My in-laws used to have a house on a canal in Walden. Couple times a year cormorants would push down the canal 2 or 3 dozen at a time and eat up anything with gills. You seriously couldn't catch a panfish for weeks after they came through.

Cormorants should be taken off the Migratory Bird Protection list, and a $10 bounty awarded for each dead one. I'd start carrying a .410 in my skiff. IslandJim
