My boat and my electronics are stored in 2 separate places and so everytime I'm able to get on the water, i feel like I'm spending half my time getting my Garmins all reconfigured.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how they're able to configure their Garmins off the water? Do I need a new power cable and small 12V battery?

I have a Garmin 126SV and Garmin 96SV.

not sure what you mean by reconfigure but you would need a power cord and 12 volt battery source. You could also buy a docking station for both and mount on a piece of wood.

Are you worried about theft? Maybe you keep the boat on a lift?

just rig a reliable 12 volt source in your shop/garage and do it on a bench
I have a small 12 volt lithium battery that powers the wife's golf caddy. Makes a perfect portable power source.

I am curious what you mean by reconfiguring. Updates or adding waypoints? I would think that if you shut your boat down, power graphs and boat down. Remove graphs. Then next trip you put graphs back on and repower everything, there shouldn't be anything you need to do.

Yeah mainly updates and adding waypoints mostly. It also seems like if i don't run them after a while they don't connect to the GPS system very quickly.

I keep it on a slip away from my house and don't like leaving the electronics on it due to weather/theft/etc.. Although right now my boat is out of the water with the lake being so low.

I also really just want to nerd out on all of the Garmin settings away from the water. Anytime I'm using it on the water I feel like I'm more worried about getting my line in the water rather than playing with it.

Should also mention that i would like my 2 Garmins to talk to eachother. They don't seem to do that on the boat right now.

I think your answer is another power cord and a battery, unless you want to get a fancy power supply. My concern is powering up graphs without what accessories installed into the boat is do you risk having the graph auto detect what is not there on the test rig, then auto detect what is there when it's on the boat.

That is going to be a network cable that connects the two. It won't do it wifi or any other way.

I have a similar setup, except my 9" unit is a 93sv. I bought a network cable to connect them together, but I don't think it was really worth the trouble. I run the LS on the 12" all the time, so it really doesn't need access to all the info on the other one. The biggest problem is that Garmin put one map on one, and a different map on the other, and they are in a constant battle for control. Garmin was nice enough to send me another map to install on the 9" to make them the same, but I still get error messages every time I go fishing - it's told me a hundred times that "the update is incompatible with the map."

You may be using yours in a different way so that it's worth it to you, but mine didn't help a lot with the network cable.

You should be able to share your waypoints among both units and your cell phone by using the Garmin WiFi. Have you set it up and connected your phone to the Garmins? That is the easiest way I've found to do the updates. I download them to the phone at home and then connect the phone to the Garmin network once I'm on the boat and add the updates to the units. Whatever waypoints I've added will also be added to the system.

Good luck with it. Garmin has great products, but they could have made them easier to operate.

I think we run very similar setups and maybe similar issues. 126sv up front and the 93sv (earlier was typo) at the helm. I guess what I'm having issues with is that I'm only able to set up the ActiveCaptain with my 93sv and not with my 126sv up front. If i can have them in sync one would think i can do all the syncing at the help then livescope up front. But since they aren't synced, I'm not getting my waypoints up front. This in turn causes me to get lost from the waypoints while I'm livescoping.

BTW I just have a fortrex so spot lock isn't accessible for me right now. Shouldve just paid up for the ultrex but was talked out of it by the guy selling it to me. What a horrible salesman lol

Only one of the units can have an Active Captain card in it if they are networked, but the other unit should still be able to get all the info. My boat is a stick steering rig with the LS on the port side and the 9" on the starboard and both are even with my front seat. Since I can see both all the time, having them networked doesn't benefit me a whole lot. It has helped occasionally when running the outboard in fog to be able to switch the big unit to navigation and get a bigger picture.

Since you've got one up front and one on the console, I believe it will be worth it to you to buy a network cable and hook them together.. It sounds like that would solve your issues. It's basically plug and play once you get one. Hope it works out for you!
