Called to try and set up an appointment to take my boat in for service. It's a Ranger Z520 with a Mercury 250 ProXS 2012. They told me the new policy is that they are no longer able to perform work on motors over 10 years old. WTF? That is absolutely crazy!

I don’t blame them for setting whatever policy works best for them. Once things with motors get about that age it’s hard to track down factory oem parts that carry a warranty. Not in every situation but in enough that they made a business decision not to do that.

Never ever buy a boat from BPS. They are the worst heard cpl stories. Even some salesman agree.

Crazy. That tells me they don’t need the business.

If I had a son in High School I would be sending him to mechanic or plumber school so he can apprentice and then I’d help fund his own business. They can charge a fortune because no one knows how or wants to do the job.

Some Boat mechanics have so much work it takes 2-4 weeks just to get them to look at it. They’ll turn away older motors because it’s not worth the hassle. Every time they fix something, another thing breaks and the customer gets pissed thinking they are being taken advantage of bc they know nothing about motors.

More so to keep customers from getting sticker shock when they get the bill. Having to explain why there’s 4 extra hours of labor tacked on to extract seized bolts

I get not working on some old POS motor, but a well maintained garage kept 2012 is ridiculous. I usually don't take my boat there anyways. I only called to see if they might be able to get it done faster and they are closer.

I was told the same thing by Honda when I needed some work done on an ATV. Doesn’t say much for their customer support after the purchase and if I ever purchase a new one again it will factor into my decision on what brand and where to buy it from.

Sounds pretty consistent with the Johnny Morris decision-making process. Let's stop working on boats over 10 years old. Walk them up to the showroom and sell them a new one.

Smart move... A lot of boats in that age range may still be under warranty... Get in get em' out... Dan

Went by a shop down on Fork a while back and they had up a sign out front stating they no longer worked on rigs of a certain age.

I can see this becoming the norm more and more. Also dealers not servicing boats/motors not purchased through them also.

It's a drive from Round Rock but give Brian a call at Parker Marine in Marble Falls. He's busy (aren't they all) but if you plan a little ahead he can get you in. He's worked on a couple of my boats. Good job..."reasonable" price. Not cheap, reasonable.

I wonder what would happen if I took my 20’year old boat with a 2023 motor on it to get work done? Would they work on part of it and say no to the rest? Haha.
