A lady was selling some stuff out of a trailer by the road, so I stopped to see what she had. There were 2 very dusty rods with reels so I asked her the price. She also said she thought the box next to the rods had some reels. I looked in the box full of rags and dirt and observed a handle for an old penn reel. The price she gave me was good enough that I didn’t even look at anything. I just gave her the money and threw everything in the van. When I got home the box was full of severely backlashed reels. After some extensive cleaning, it appears when the angler got a backlash they just threw the reel in a box and got another one. Do you just discard backlashed reels and get a new one, or do you remove your backlashes and keep using the reel?

I actually chunked an H2O TAC40 reel in the lake. First day I bought it. POS.

If the backlash isn't bad I pick it out and keep throwing.

I'll pick it out. If it's reel bad (pun intended) I'll set it aside and cut it out later.

I paid $1 for everything. scared

I actually felt bad about it when I got home. I thought it was going to be a box of old out of date reels, like the Penn, that I could use for parts. It turned out that only one was broken. If I had looked closer I would have given her more money. She was selling everything for $1, including furniture. She was moving and said she needed the trailer empty.

I give away a lot of rods and reels to young anglers, so there should be some happy kids soon.

I have snagged or picked up a few rods and backlashed reels that were obviously thrown in out of frustration. roflmao

I can relate to cutting them out. It took me a couple of hours to cut the backlashes out of these reels and clean them up.

She needs to get a Daiwa Tatula SV TWS and not have to worry about backlashes any longer. You can set up that reel to make a long cast and never even thumb the spool.

There is a Diawa Tatula TWS in the lot. It is the red and black reel with the big backlash. I will say it was the smoothest reel in the group. I have never used one and plan to put it on the All Star rod and give it a try.

Depends....I have a few rod/reel combos just for certain situations. An example if I am using my 4:9.1 reel throwing super deep crankbaits and get a backlash in it I will pick it out because that reel is just used for that one type of lure. When i get into the 7:1.1 and up reels, nah, I have 15 or more that is ready to go. I will pick it out of just re-line it when I get back home. I usually always re-line my reels once every two months anyways, maybe sooner if I have had to pick out some backlashes.
