I'm trying to get a fishing trip in the works to Amistad and I was wondering about a place to camp. I prefer camping rather than staying in motels but I was wondering if it was safe/practical at amistad. I'll only be there on a fri/sat night, and it would be just two us us. It would be nice to find a place that had electricity but if not I do have a generator that I will probably take anyway. I was looking at the TPWD website and thought that the Rough Canyon area looked like a good one. Does anybody have any experience with camping in that locale? I'm not looking for anything fancy, just a place to set a tent and park one truck with a boat -preferably where I could charge the batteries. And some place where I'm most likely not going to get robbed while I'm off fishing and I can feel as comfortable as you can leaving a 40,000 bass boat and a truck out in the open. Any sugggestions and/or contacts as to how to reserve a place for one of the next few weekends would be great. thanks

I haven't been to the Rough Canyon campgrounds in a long time, but if you want to fish the Devil's River that would be a great place to launch.
The Del Rio area in general is pretty low crime.
If you want to fish the main lake area you could camp at San Pedro Flats. They have a ramp there that few people launch from, but you've got to idle out about 100yrds before you can get out of the cove. I think some of the sites have electricity.
For more info on campgrounds you'll need to go to the National Park Service website.

Camping is permittd along the shore (within 100 ft) at Amistad. It is common, especially during holiday weekends. There are lots of places up the Devil's River where you can just set up along the bank. Here is a link to the regulations: http://www.nps.gov/amis/parkmgmt/upload/compendium_04_2006.pdfIt's around page 10 or so If you want creature comforts here is a list of campgrounds: American Campground 830-775-6484 Holiday Travelpark 830-775-7575 Buzzard's Roost 830-774-5151 Lonesome Dove RV Park 830-774-1823 3 Rivers 830-778-2241 Fisherman's Headquarters 830-774-5670
