Revolver only. Nothing worse then picking up an “automatic” and wondering if one has been chambered. A small 38 S&W should work well for an older person.

That said, when I leave town I take a Taurus Judge along.

If he can handle it, I recommend the judge as a house gun loaded with .410 shotgun shells.

Garand Thumb on YouTube has an interesting, controversial take on carry ammo that I’ve adopted. I would also consider him an authority on the subject because he has more shots down range than every person on this forum combined as well as a plethora of training from top notch instructors.

He states that if you regularly spend time shooting, odds are you’re using FMJ range ammo. That’s what you’re more than likely going to be accustomed to and you’re going to know how your gun handles it. With that logic, it makes sense to use standard FMJ range ammo as your carry ammo. I shoot thousands and thousands of rounds of 9mm range ammo a year, so I know how my guns react to it. Using some high dollar hollow points that are not economically feasible to train with regularly makes no sense because you will never have that much of an understanding of how your gun functions with that variable.

I don't have a 380 or 9mm, but I carry HSM Bear Load in the guns I have.
