My passport came in unexpectedly early, so I was able to make the much-awaited trip to Canada for salmon! I went out to a couple of creeks by my grandparent's house and fished mainly solo so I couldn't get pics of ALL the fish I caught. I think I totaled to about 9 caught and tenfold as many lost. I learned some important things, though I'm sure they translate well into fly fishing for a variety of species- things about casting with large flies or weights or long streamers (which were a pain in the butt at first), proper hooksets (which were particularly important give the bony and toothy mouths of the spawning kype), proper leader material and weights (many of these creeks had incredibly high fishing pressure and this was really the key component in catching one) and lastly fighting these larger fish were things that I saw a visible improvement on. Of course, there's so much I need to improve on as well! many times these fish congregate near log jams, and I found it particularly challenging to keep them from breaking me off under these log jams in their initial runs- I still need to figure that one out, but their wild and acrobatic runs make your only option holding on and praying that it runs the opposite direction. Another great takeaway was being able to (somewhat) teach my three younger cousins how to fly fish! i was quite busy trying to get them on a fish when i think i should have started by just teaching them the fundamentals of fishing and letting them get at it afterward. One of them mentioned wanting a fly rod for her birthday so maybe when they come to Texas in December ill have one waiting for her, ready to fish Oklahoma for some trout nonetheless, here were the two salmon I, unfortunately, was unable to revive and ended up coming home with us. Even more heartbreakingly the fish were good big hens so lots of eggs were taken out of the environment. at the very least it was able to feed some very happy families. ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2023/10/full-113910-200448-salmon2.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2023/10/full-113910-200449-salmon1.jpg)
