I have a 1998 Evinrude Intruder OB and according to specs it should WOT at 5500 RPM's. Before I took my boat in for service to have the controls/throttle unit changed that's exactly what it would top out at. After the controls/throttle unit was changed my max RPM's are now right around 4600rpm's. I used to hit 60mph by myself and now I can barely hit 52mph. I talked to my mechanic about it and he said it was due to the crappy controller/throttle unit I bought and had him replace. I had purchased the unit new and had him install it and I admit, it is the cheapest, crappy new unit I could find.

My question is, shouldn't there still be a way to adjust the throttle cable to get it back up to 5500RPM's? Doesn't seem like any new control/throttle unit would be that crappy would it?

This is the unit I bought and had replaced.

Yes, you should be able to adjust it to get WFO.

Definitely.

Step 1 Remove carb cover.
Step 2 Move throttle to WOT position and observe all carb plates are in the wide open position.

If they aren't, I'd return it to the Tech who you paid to do the work for you and let him make the necessary adjustments.

Doesn't sound like you have a control issue but a mechanic issue.

Sounds like it doesn’t have enough travel to reach full throttle. It may not be compatible. Y’all might be trashing this mechanic for no reason. Seems like the cable wind in the handle may be too small. It does mention an adapter for some year models….maybe yours might need one.

In my experience with boats….the cheap part ain’t ever the right part.

You *should*
Be able to detach cable at the motor. Set it to WFO then turn the holding pin until they match up.

Or maybe relocate the attachment point on the throttle lever a tiny bit closer to the pivot, creating more throw with a smaller diameter throttle handle.

Seems like it would be a simple thing. But sometimes simple just means getting the right parts.
