Just wondering if anyone has been fishing the Bolivar peninsula recently ? Headed down on the Sept 30th to spend a week for my wife's birthday and will be taking some gear to fish the surf, north jetty and maybe some other areas . Anything biting right now or will be within the next few weeks ? Total rookie and just trying to figure some things out, baits live or dead, fresh or frozen etc. Best type of rig to use ? I got some popping corks, some pompano rigs and some lead heads with soft plastics to throw along with some gold and silver spoons, some shrimp imitations and a few other things to try . As time gets closer I am getting more and more excited, just hoping to catch 1 picture fish whether it is a bull red , black drum or something else other than hard heads and stingrays . Any suggestions or advise would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance . Tight lines everyone and catch a ton .

Go check out the salt water reports. Jeff Brandon gives a weekly report.

https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/forums/10/1/saltwater-reports

Also, the jetties will be holding bull reds and shark.

There should be bull reds in the surf if you can get your bait out far enough,

I will be headed down there after you and I am taking my boat. My 8 year old boy wants to catch a bull red all by him self. Last time we went he was 5 and I had to hold the rod. This time its all him. HAHA

Chunks of cut mullet, blue crab, or any other bait fish on a carolina rig should do the trick.

Thank you, I read that report weekly, I don't have a boat so I am limited to bank fishing only . It is always only me fishing so I don't want to use a guide but it might be helpful sometime . I may hike out to the boat cut on the north jetty one morning and make a day out of it, just gonna be tough to carry my gear and enough water to get through the day.

Man, the time is rapidly approaching and I am really getting pumped !!! According to Tides 4 Fishing, the bite is supposed to be pretty darn good that week for 3 or 4 days .

Surf is good for trout now in first and second gut from daylight to maybe 8:30am if the wind stays decent and water clarity is good.

I would catch them on a 1/4 oz jig head and Bass Assassin Sea Shad in Chicken on the Chain. Fish have been pretty solid ones.

Shrimp on a popping cork should be can’t miss it the trout are there.

Wind doesn’t look good all week. Surf will likely be blown out. Maybe Windy app has it wrong.

I'm seeing 15 - 25 in the forecast, it is supposed to be from the east southeast and not real sure how that will affect the surf there. I guess worst case scenario is that I can fish the north jetty and the broken bridge area off of frenchtown road

Surf is very angry today and water stirred up, with higher winds forecast for tomorrow. Wishing you the best though !

The surf on Bolivar was absolutely blown out this past week and surf fishing was pretty much out of the question for me so I found myself a out of the way spot where the wind was manageable and had myself a pretty good outing . Caught several species of fish including the picture fish I was looking for . A nice bull red, not the largest but definitely picture worthy . Caught a really nice flounder, or to me it was anyway . Darn thing was 16-18" and was fun to catch . I Caught several sheephead, black drum and even some piggie perch and what was the smallest Gafftopsail I have ever seen on another day . Between the rain and the wind, I made the best of it and had a great time . Forgot to mention, the pic of the 4" paddle tail is what I caught the redfish on .

Nice post and fish, glad you had a successful trip in less than perfect conditions.
