I think I'd rather just go to a good lake that has a lot of fish.

I pretty much fish Whitney exclusively due to limited time. This thread makes me feel a lot better about myself. Thanks!
It's only a good cast if you catch a fish... Personal Best: 11.62 lbs

I haven't been down since the last week of May. I fished from 7-11am today. Had 5 all right at 14 inches by 8am. I'd say 3 were keepers, and two were just short. Had two more bites about 9am. Saw lots of bait, but never could locate any schools of fish. If I caught one then I at least caught two within 100yds of one another. Lake is definitely turning over mid lake. Stinks to high heaven out by the state park. Lots of nasty brown water. It'll turn on in a couple weeks is my guess.

FYI, Whitney used to be a great winter lake...to many Florida's and it won't be.
Species Year Number Stocked Size Bass, Striped 2023 120,281 Fingerling Bass, Smallmouth 2023 200,822 Fingerling Bass, Smallmouth 2023 9,230 Fry Bass, Striped 2022 207,722 Fingerling Bass, Smallmouth 2022 88 Adult Bass, Smallmouth 2022 102,890 Fingerling Bass, Smallmouth 2022 11,250 Fry Bass, Striped 2021 330,739 Fingerling Bass, Striped 2021 468,325 Fry Bass, Smallmouth 2021 97 Adult Bass, Smallmouth 2021 70,927 Fingerling Bass, Smallmouth 2020 30,309 Fingerling Bass, Striped 2019 191,848 Fingerling Bass, Striped 2018 1,006,185 Fry Bass, Striped 2017 340,316 Fingerling Bass, Striped 2017 688,065 Fry Bass, Striped 2016 103,841 Fingerling Bass, Striped 2015 325,028 Fingerling Bass, Striped 2014 380,641 Fingerling Bass, Striped 2013 237,052 Fingerling Bass, Striped 2013 614,994 Fry Bass, Smallmouth 2011 134,722 Fingerling Bass, Striped 2010 148,055 Fingerling Bass, Striped 2010 415,763 Fry Bass, Smallmouth 2010 73,644 Fingerling Bass, Striped 2009 543,846 Fingerling Bass, Striped 2008 332,262 Fingerling Bass, Striped 2007 495,015 Fingerling Bass, Striped 2006 322,532 Fingerling Bass, Striped 2005 332,999 Fingerling Sunfish, Bluegill 2005 13,747 Fingerling Bass, Striped 2004 84,184 Fingerling Bass, Smallmouth 2004 5,609 Fingerling Bass, Florida Largemouth 2004 589,978 Fingerling 100% Agree. How can the 11th largest lake in Texas not any Largemouth since 2004? It will be 20 years next year. I don't care if its Northern largemouth. I commend TPWD on doing a great job on many lakes in Texas, but Whitney has been overlooked and it's showing. There is enough funding to get a few stockings. Jay

I agree with jcatch7 he nails it right on the head. As I stated earlier before my partner and I have a combined 100 years of experience on this lake and when we can go out and get skunked it's a sad state of affairs. And yes we are a couple of old farts. The last big smallmouth I caught was January 25, 2018 4lbs 12oz. TPWD needs to take a look here.

My son lives in Whitney and is trying to teach my grandsons how to bass fish. He calls and asks what he's doing wrong and why they can't seem to catch bass on Whitney. I tell him the answer is simple - not one time has anyone said " hey, lets go to Whitney for some awesome bass fishing" Not. one. time.

When my parents owned a place at Uncle Gus' the fishing was awesome in the 70's and 80's. Got to fish Aquilla when it first opened up and got to see it in it's prime. Then was lucky enough to start fishing Fork when you had to launch from an old dirt road and be there almost every weekend through it's prime. I am lucky to have those millions of memories and not have to start my fishing journey these days.

Its a different time now for sure, I remember listening to Barry Stokes on the radio talk about how insanely awesome the fishing was at Fork back then

I would propose that Fishing Clubs unite to build and maintain "small" hatcheries where they can raise fingerlings to restock into lakes. This can be accomplished by being permitted and working with TPW in local areas. Acquiring stock breeders by purchase and permitting caught fish. Local social organizations such as biology school groups, Boy Scouts, or conservation groups can be engaged.
Just a thought. Waiting for Dinosaurs to stampede is not very productive.

Back in the day, if you didn't catch 100 bass in a weekend on Fork you either sucked as a fisherman or something was off.

I can tell you for sure that fishing is tough everywhere right now . When a tournament is won on PK with 13 # it's tough as was the case this weekend .
