A few months ago, I bought the Lew's Pro SP (Skipping and Pitching reel) and I'd like an opinion on what rod to pare it with. I currently have it on an old Allstar 7'0 Med Heavy, Fast rod. I love the reel, but I have seriously backlashed this thing by chunking my lure too close to the boat and not getting it out in front as I should. I'm thinking about getting a shorter rod (maybe 6'10 or 6'8 length). I'm looking online at the Dobyns DC610-4C, which is a 6'10 heavy / fast which is advertised as an ideal skipping rod. Does anyone have any thoughts on this or have any suggestions other than I need to practice more?

Dobyns 610 is what i was skipping a jig with under docks on Cypress Springs. Had a 7 and 6 both wrap around poles and was able to slowly manage them while walking them back out to safe water. Great hook setting power (I use a heavy wire hook on a 1/4 oz jig). And enough tip to work a jig, while not sacrificing sensitivity. I am very pleased with this particular rod!

Thanks for the response. I think I'm going to order the DC610, but it won't be delivered until next week. I'm fishing Conroe this weekend. Any advise?

This right here...the 6'9" model is what I have. I started to learn skipping this year and found this rod to be perfect for learning and getting into tight spaces. I can skip frogs, chatterbaits, and senkos with ease.

I think height can have a lot of impact on rod preference and performance. I'm a taller guy 6'5" and I prefer a 7'2" or 7'3" MH XF rod for skipping.

I am short, 5'8" and I use a 6'10" Falcon Head Turner which works good for me.

I'm 5'6" and prefer the shorter rod to skip with...guess height does make a difference.

I have a practically brand new Dobyn's skipping rod in my rod box right now. It's a great rod, just not exactly what I was looking for and I went a different direction. I'm in Montgomery, on lake Conroe. If you haven't paid for a new one yet, I'd be willing to sell you mine while your'e in town this weekend. I'd take $185 for it, that's what it cost me with my discount.

I like my Falcon 6'10" Eakins jig rod and my Loomis GCX 853 JWM . Longer than 7'1' is more difficult for4 me the pitch with

Dobyns Extreme 684 with a Tatula SV TW. Shimano 6-8 Expride with a Tatula SV TW. Falcon Low RIder 6-8 with a Tatula SV TW.
The Tatula SV TW best anti backlash reel on the market.
