Just make sure that is exactly what you need. Most dealers will not give a refund on electrical parts once ordered.

Mike, its doing the same thing it did in Nov, when I replaced it then..( low charging, no tach)--the people I got this one from, says CDI will replace it ,as its under a year old.. Been trying to get a person at CDI for a day and a half..If it takes as long to get as it does to talk to them, I'll be without for a while...

Here's some interesting facts about your regulator/rectifier. It's water cooled, If your engine is running hotter than 143 degrees, it will shorten it's life. If you are running two batteries with a battery selector switch and while the engine is running, you change from battery 1 to battery 2....poof! out it goes. If you charge your battery while the engine cables are attached to the battery....poof! It can go out. They make 2 different styles of regulators. One is a fin the other is a pin style. (cooling fins) The pin style cools better. If your battery cables have any corrosion on them....poof! out it goes. When you think your battery cables are tight..get a pair of pliers. Any resistance from the battery cables to the battery...poof! out it goes. Some of the regulators are hooked directly to the VRO...your VRO may be going out, overloading the regulator....poof! out it goes. Your battery may be going out causing the regulator to work overtime...poof! out it goes. Never disconnect the battery cables while the engine is running...poof! out it goes. And lastly, don't jumpstart your engine..........This may help save that costly item....mike

Thanks Halfmann.. the only thing I do on your list is, charging the battery, while the engine cables are attached to the battery..... Mine is the pin type, and I hope to heXX my VRO is not the cause...How do I tell if its connected to the VRO..

The VRO connection (electrical) will have a red wire in the bundle.

the only red wire I have is the long one in the pic--it goes to the solenoid..the quick connect has two yellow, and the other two wires are grey and purple..thanks

Not to hijack the post, but does a 79 johnson 140 HP v4 have a Voltage Regulator, and if not, can it be added?

A 79-140 does have a voltage regulator/rectifier. It only puts out 4-6amps. Your tack is hooked into the recharging system and reads recharge impulses and converts them into RPM. The tack does not read sparks to the spark plugs. So therefore if your tack is working, then you are charging the battery. With some fabrication you could install a 35 amp water cooled volt/reg by changing the stator and installing the volt/reg into the block providing you have the mounting surface that is required located just below the flywheel, between the cylinder banks. But there again you will be spending +-$500 or just charge the battery with a $50 battery charger and be done with it...mike

Mike H. speaking of the 79 in the previos post brings up my question. I run two old 85 hp motors: a 73 evinrude, and a 77 johnson. What things must I watch for to keep these charging systems from going "poof they are gone" ? So far over the years I have only had trouble with the power packs, but at Whitney not too long back my Humminbird went poof while running at higher speed. It seems that higher or low voltage can make this happen. Humminbird co. made it all good, but I want to make sure I dont have voltage spikes or something. Is there an add on voltage device to guard against this. Thanks

gaspergou, basically there is nothing you can do to prevent the charging system from going out on either one of your engines, other than, 1. not charging the battery while the engine is connnected to it or 2. don't accidently reverse the battery cables when you attach them to the battery. Other than that, there is no preventative maintence. mike

its called a rectifier, check out the "rapair"company on the internet they are reconditioed but they come with a 1 year warranty where the factory part is 90 day

got my replacement for the RAPAIR INC.. they may be the repair branch of CDI..no charge to me, but it shows a charge of $155.00 to CDI..I think I paid Surplus Unlimited $175,00 for it last year. So I'm guessing RAPAIR would be a place to check..
