Right hand reels are perfect for me because I am left handed.

I never worry about switching from my right to left hand. It takes a split second. I do wish I was better casting left handed so I could get a better angle on the left side of docks.

Right hand, left retrieval for me.

I never understood why people couldn’t reel with their support hand. What’s the advantage of casting with one hand and switching? Why would you switch the rod between your hands every cast? Why would you set the hook with your weak hand? If I want a strong hookset, I want to use my strong hand.

Given the choices, I want to use my strong hand to do all the hard work and use my support hand to twirl a handle. What is so hard about reeling with your weak hand? You’re just twirling your wrist. It’s not that hard.

I mean, if that’s how you do it, let you’re freak flag fly. Keep doing what you’re doing.

I'm right handed and have had right handed reels all my life. When I was a young man I learned to cast left handed but not really accurately. it was primarily for casting buzz baits that I needed to start retrieving as soon as they hit the water.. Also Traps in shallow water, could start the retrieve as soon as it hit the water. Now, at 71, I don't fish many baits that I need to cast left handed but if I am over open water I do it from time to time. Watching the pros cast left handed ,most of them use two hands when casting from either side and usually very accurately.

I am right handed but, I have been pitching and casting with both right and left hands for over 20 plus years. Took a little getting use to casting with the left hand, but mastered it with practice in about 3 months. I have owned right and left reels and use them both.

i trained myself to pitch left handed in the back yard, overall it really helped my accuracy and come the weekend on the water it was smooth transitioning between the two; because I too generally cast right handed and switch the rod to reel right handed...except for a spinning rod, I cast right and reel left...but now I can pitch left or right handed and it really helps when fishing off one side of the boat or the other going in different directions - fishing the moment... don't laugh, there was I guy I used to fish with who could only go one way down the bank and fish off one side of the boat because he could only cast one way right handed and he could only set the hook with his left hand up and to the right - no joke !...

We generally fish that way when I fish bass club tournaments. The guy is the back of my boat is left handed, I'm right handed. It works easiest for us to fish left to right down the bank.

Very right handed also. I found that using a reel that has a flipping button is the ticket for pitching jigs and texas rigs.
Garcia makes a great reel for about $100 or less that has one. They used to make a Silver Max ($60) model but upgraded it to something else.
I thing Diawa makes one also
You can set the hook then change hands, works great.

I am right handed and tried using a left handed reel two years ago; save my right shoulder. It felt weird but I got used to it. I ended up giving my left handed reel to my nephew as a gift. Not because it did not like it but because he was a lefty and a new angler. I'm back to using my right handed reels.

With all this said, it does not matter to me and I fish both fresh and salt water.

This discussion comes up about once a month. I am right-handed and my first "real" reel was a Mitchell 300. They were all left-hand retrieve. When I started using bait casters, I saw no reason to do anything but use a left-hand retrieve model. Most people are right-handed, and I would imagine the majority of them use right-hand retrieve reels. Use whatever is best for you.

The one thing that makes me scratch my head is that a lot of those guys will use a left-hand retrieve spinning reel.

Be safe,

Love my lefties and another great thing is no one wants to borrow or use them. That's a rod saver. peep

I am left handed and use right handed reels. it seems way more natural to not have to switch hands. I think they should rename right and left handed reels honestly
