Yesterday tried to go fishing and my started just spun and nothing happened. Look a little further and I could spin the starter with a wrench and the flywheel would spin as well. I'm guessing the main spline has stripping inside the the adapter. Will this be an easy fix? Just buy a new starter and install?

Your starter has a bendix gear that spins up to engage your flywheel, sounds like your Bendix gear spring is weak or the gear is dirty ...you can try cleaning it to see if that helps, or you can remove the starter and have it repaired at a starter/alternator shop...if you can find one. Or you can just purchase a new one and replace it...fairly easy to remove and install...
