i went a little past the 30mi marker two weekends ago. it did start to get rougher but knock on wood we didn't have any trouble. caught some gaftopp in the surf but nothing else. will try to push a little further next time until i start to feel more comfortable with it.
my kids have been seeing the shark rigs out there. theyve got some interest in trying that. i don't want to catch any monsters as i wouldn't know what to do with them but something up to 3-5 or 6ft might be interesting. I saw at bass pro they sold a combo a penn114H on a pretty sturdy looking rod for around $200.....something like this would work? for the not occaisional not super serious beach shark fisherman? waht sort of line would i need to roll up on that?

Any setup that gets bait out by casting or can be kayaked out will work. You don't have to carry baits really far. A lighter rig will lose the bigger fish but I have used Penn 114s with a Shakespeare Ugly Stik. the 114 is heavy compared to the newer reels but it will work.
Back in the mid 70s, I watched a guy fight a monster hammerhead for about 2 hours using a heavy six foot fiberglass rod and a Penn 112. The first run that reel was smoking. The second we were dousing it with water to cool it down. The drag held until that shark wrapped around the pier pylon and broke off. It was an epic battle. The main gear started go to before the drag.
Saying that, I'd get what you can afford and try it out. The worst that could happen is you have to cut off a big fish. Never know, you might pull in a big red instead.
You can get used 114s on ebay for pretty cheap. You just have to look them over well. I buy them and refurbish. Some I give away, some I sell and some I upgrade. I'm working on a fanken reel right now that is a 114 conversion to automatic dual speed lever drag. Don't ask me why.
I fish on a 14 ft piece of plastic.
