Down here in Waco we have some humongous freshwater mullet. Here is a pic of my daughter with one we caught in a cast net. It weighed nearly 5 lbs. Has anyone ever fished for them with hook and line? Any tips would be appreciated!

Wow,that is a huge mullet.
that probably would of been a great battle on rod and reel.

I would rather have a bad day fishing, than a good day at the office!

Yes Me and my brother catch them all the time.

Chum them in with dry dog food. put it in a conntaner of some kind and and water. once it has turned in to mush, spoon it in to the water.

Bait: use cut and shelled shrimp. fish on bottom.

If you need any thing else let me know!

It seems like certain saltwater fish can move a long way into freshwater rivers.

GG, thanks! What kind of line/terminal tackle do you use? Also, how do they bite?

diadromous fish travel between salt and fresh water. (Greek: 'Dia' is between) There are three types of diadromous fish:

1.anadromous fish live in the sea mostly, breed in fresh water (striped bass, salmon, etc)

2.catadromous fish live in fresh water, breed in the sea (american eel)
*
3.amphidromous fish move between fresh and salt water during some part of life cycle, but not for breeding. Amphidromous fish can spawn in either freshwater or in a marine environment. About one fifth of all diadromous fish are amphidromous.

At first I thought that the "-dromous" suffix might refer to water, but I learned on Wikipedia that it actually means "moving" or "running." The word "dromedary" (camel) properly refers to Arabian racing camels.

The more I look at that fish, the more I want to catch one.

It looks like a cross between a striped bass and a white amur.

very cool.

Huge eye on that thing. It looks like a 6-inch long fish was scaled up to almost two feet.

I had a mullet save my rod & reel once. A friend of a friend of mine were fishing on a pier in Florida and this guy was using my rod & reel. He threw a line out and leaned the rod against the rail, he droped his lighter and while bending down to get it a fish grabbed his line and the rod was on it's way over the rail until it became entangled in his mullet. Thank god for the mullet.
