I normally drive from NW Austin to Port Aransas going down highway 183 to refugio, Tx then over to 35business to Aransas Pass, then Tx 361 over the ferry....
How do you go to Port Aransas?
I have to be there no later than 9:30pm to get into the RV park, before they close the gates for the night....How much time should I allow, when driving a motorhome?
I thought about going thru San Marcos, then turning south...to Aransas Pass...then ferry...
I noticed that Yahoo Maps took me down I35 to I37 to CC-SPID, then turn left onto Tx. 361...

I think 183 is the best way, in Refugio turn left at the last light, 774, then in a couple of miles at the stop sign turn right on 136, that will lead into 35 a few miles from Aransas. Best of luck, it is all good roads. If timing is good, grab a bite to eat at Croffuts in Bayside. MMMM..MMMM...gooood!!!!

Take 35 to San Antonio, unless you are going to leave Austin or go through SA during rush hour.

I find that the best way isn't always the quickest. This isn't the long way around but is how I always go. I would rather have a burning bamboo stake jabbed under one of my fingernails than drive on I35.
Take 183 South to Luling. Right before the RR tracks, turn right and follow your nose to City Market. Stop and eat some of the best Texas style BBQ in the world.
Returning to your trip, get back on 183 South and go to Cuero (home of the fighting Gobblers). At Cuero take 87 South towards Victoria.
About 10 miles from Victoria get on to the new Loop 463 and take it around town until you see the exit for 59 towards Refugio (pronounced Refurio).
Go south about 15 miles or so until you see 239 to Tivoli (which is "I lov it" spelled backwards).
At Tivoli get on 35 South. You will drive past the Aransas Wildlife refuge.
About 4 or 5 miles from the Copano Bay bridge there is a Texaco gas station and the Copano Bay Provision company. Believe it or not it is one of the best Italian Restaurants in Texas. We always stop there and eat on the way back to Austin.
Stay on 35 until you get to the exit for Aransas Pass.

I want to thank each one of you for your opinion...This was how we went!
Sunday, Started at 4pm, went I35 south towards San Antonio. Had a tire blow out on the motorhome! After a 2-hour delay at T/A truck stop in New Braunsfels, back on the road. After a couple quick stops, finally arrived Gulf Waters RV Resort on Mustang Island at 11pm....278 miles from my home!!
I heard that the Guad. river was flooded on highway 183 and there was detours. I believe that is the fasted way to go, in my opinion. But I have always looking for alternative routes!
Return this Tuesday evening, in about 4.5 hours, with 2-stops, and rain! plus 5pm traffic. Left Port A at 12:30pm and arrived at 5pm....

Don't know the fastest but the way I came back home from Port A. Tuesday was Aransas Pass take 181 to Karnes City then 123 to San Marcus then 35 to Austin. 3 hours and 10 minutes from the Island to Austin. Six and half from P.A. to Waxahachie. Now that pushing the speed limit as much as possable. Good luck if your fishing the kings are moving closer to shore!! Craig

I tried the 181 route a couple times but the last time I got stuck in Sinton for 2 hours after a really long train had some sort of problem and stopped on the tracks. After a half hour or so we drove around looking for a way around it or an overpass but there was no easy path. After another hour, a Sinton police car drove to the engineer and a few minutes later the train drove on. We all guessed that the engineer had a girlfriend in Sinton.
And that was the last time I drove 181.

I go 35 to 410 in San Antonio then take it to 37 to Corpus. Takes about 3 hours. this is the best way to go. it lets you go around downtown san antonio, and miss most of the traffic that comes with it.
