You can buy a decent starter combo just about anywhere for under $100. Amazon has several for around $75 that are great for the money, and not just for beginners.
I’d recommend a 9 ft, 5 WT rod to start out. That’s probably the most common size and the easiest to learn to cast. Perfect for bass fishing.
I’ll also recommend you upgrade the fly line immediately. The lines that come on combos are junk. It will slow you down when you are learning to cast and make it less fun. Look at the Piscifun Sword fly line on Amazon for about $20. In my opinion this is the best line you will find until you spend about $90 on a Rio.

I reccomend the maxcatch combos on amazon for around 70-80$- make sure to get plenty leaders and tippet!
9ft 5wt is a great happy medium. bass are very fun on it. The sunfish I've caught in my recent posts were all on a 5wt and they put up a decent fight too. you can go lighter or heavier as you figure out what exactly your going to be catching- i have an 8wt because i go for salmon every year and am currently working on getting a 1wt for my creek adventures.
as far as flies go, I love bigYfly- cheap and pretty good quality imo
tom rossenbauer has great introductory videos to get techniques down, and wild fly productions makes very good cinematics!

Howdy Brazosriverrat1985, I went through a lot of cheaper equipment until I found the best quality for the price. The Redington Crosswater kit can be purchased for cheap but there is no longer any service or parts department with Redington. So if you break rods at the rate I do it isn't worth it. I purchase TFO Lefty Krey signature series rods or TFO Pro rods. I prefer 4 piece or at least 3 pieced rods. If you break a section of the rod you can go on line and purchase a new one. A 5 weight, 8.5 ft or 9 ft rod is a good all around rod. I use an 8.5 ft. rod in the creeks or a 9 ft. rod out on the open water where I need more distance. These TFO fast acting rods are easier to cast if you overline them. So it might be beneficial to use a 6 weight line on these rods so they load and cast easier. I went through a lot of different cheap reels and they were all junk. They separate and your fly line gets caught, the drag systems suck and they seem to get sand in them at every turn. I have found, by far, the best quality reel at the price are Lamson reels. I have 4 Lamson Liquid reels plus a couple of spare spools. As far as fly lines I prefer the Cortland Rocket taper lines. I can usually find them on sale on Ebay for cheap. I know that's not a good recommendation for a starter kit but it may be beneficial for your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rods

Sierra Trading usually has pretty good name brand fly gear at a deep discount. I bought a TFO Pro II rod last year for $129.00. IslandJim

I would also recommend spending a little extra money up front and get a TFO rod. You will be happy with your decision down the road. Good Luck!

If you enjoy searching for fishing stuff, you may want to try EBay. You can often find a lot that includes the rod and reel and lots of equipment for way below retail. I use a 6/7 weight 8’6” or 9’ rod for almost all of my freshwater fly fishing. It is heavy for bluegill, but works great for bass, hybrids, catfish, carp and buffalo.

Well I figured I would let you guys know what I got. I bought a Martin 8 ft fly rod. I actually really like it. I'm going to end up getting a more expensive one Later on . I haven't really decided if I want a Redington Or a tfo. This was the first time I had to a chance to Try it out. After about a hr & a half I started getting a little Better at getting it to cast out . Its definitely a art to fly fish I learned that real quick.
