I go to port mansfield every year in late july, and i want to target sharks in the evening after catchin' boatloads of reds and trout. can you catch Blacktips that year about 60-80 feet offshore?

You can catch them right out of the marina. The bay is loaded with black tips and bulls.

There are sharks everywhere along the Texas coast, but they do move around. I have caught a lot of sharks at the north Mansfield jetty including blacktips, bull sharks, spinner sharks, bonnetheads, and hammerheads. They can be inside the jetty, on the outside of the jetty, or running the beach. You can also find them around any structure as far out as you want to go, especially if snapper are around. Since sandbar sharks have been protected, they have become a nuisance in many areas. Good luck and let us know how you do. There are some big ones out there.

I have some pictures of bull sharks in 2 ft of water off the beach near Sabine Pass. They are everywhere.

There's a ramp near my house that's 23 miles up the Arroyo Colorado from the Lower Laguna Madre. I'd be shocked if there aren't sharks there, and upstream from there. When I lived in south Florida I found that pretty much anything that swims along the coast is liable to be found in brackish, and often fresh, water. If the water's deep enough to get there, eventually they'll be there. I've caught largemouth bass and snook on back to back casts in the Everglades.

I hope you have more than than I. I go every year and have never caught one down there but then I think I am cursed because when I go people will be catching before I get there then the bite stops but starts back the day I leave.

Yeah, you can find blacktips that time of year. They're usually around 60-80 feet offshore, but sometimes they can be closer or further out. Are you looking for any specific tips on catching them?

I don’t remember a beach trip going back many years that I haven’t caught at least a baby shark!

I just want to try to catch one while i'm chilling on a dock with a bait 40-60 feet from the shore. Love eating shark and i think they be a blast on the rod too.

Fish at least one on the bottom and don’t drift too fast. All of the above baits work but could spin drifting. Ribbonfish should be used too and live piggy perch are great too. Frozen chub is highly recommended as are the guts of the mornings catch. Osborn is so correct! I often fish anywhere from 15 to 40 miles out. It’s almost impossible to not catch a shark or a big red snapper. Their numbers are incredible. Might as well forget fishing for anything else. Not having any rigs left doesn’t help either.

i'll be in port mansfield for a few days in early august coming up. with a boat. It'll be my first time to fish that part of the coast, any recommendations on what i should look for in terms of spots? will be taking kids out hopefully to catch something, reds, drum, whatever. My initial thought was to just fish along the edges of the cut, maybe into some of those side inlets on the south end of the cut. not sure though, would appreciate any advice or pointers in the right direction.

That's a good plan. If the water's moving (tides) those will all be high potential spots.
