What is your favorite shark bait for the surf? How far do you put your line out and what pound braid do you use? Do you have any other pointers?

Shark fishing is my favorite!! I hit the beach at least twice a month in search of sharks. My favorite bait for sharks is hardheads. There is a certain way that I prepare them for the hook but they work excellent. Cut their heads off on the body side of the dorsal fin and cut off the tail. Put the circle hook through the small part of the body. I normally put out about 3 rods and vary the distance of each drop. I kayak baits and I drop with drone. Do not think that you have to get baits out far to catch a shark. There are 2-3 footers within 20ft of the beach and I've caught 5ft+ sharks right over the first sandbar. I have multiple rods with multiple lb/test lines. My smallest braid is 65lb and my largest is 150lb. My biggest advice is 1. Have a game plan on what you're going to once you catch a shark. It only takes a few minutes out of the water before they die. So, if you plan on releasing, be ready to do it quickly. 2. If you plan on harvesting the shark, you should know how to identify it. Some sharks are illegal to harvest and some have to be a certain length. I've been asked a ton of questions and I've dome some write ups to common fishing questions that I've got over the years. Its called The Basics. Check it out. Lots of good info there

Very nice post Just Bitten.
I have been a dozen times over the past 5 years and never caught one. Never used hardhead so I will try that this fall.
I have heard ladyfish is great but never had any luck. Then again I have never caught a redfish either and always try so maybe I just suck at fishing.

Looking for some advice on making the drive all the way from malaquite beach Down to the mansfield cut. I’m sure someone here has done it. I’ve driven 20mi down but never farther. Does it get any tougher than what I’ve seen at 20mi? Or is it just 40miles farther? What do I need to know about tides is I was maybe going to stay thru the night?

Most of the times that I've been down there, the driving starts to get bad around the 25-30MM area. Travel on low tide and you won't have any issues. High tide traveling can get bad in the soft sand but if you've ever been to Matagorda, its similar to that (especially this year). I've seen 2wd cars at the jetty but I don't recommend it. Bring extra gas just in case. No phone signal, lots of coyotes, beautiful nights, stunning water & beach, desolate. Tow trucks won't come get you down there. Its worth a few minutes to read the beach rules on the PINS website. There is good info there about right-of-way traffic on the beach and other stuff. I think they also update beach conditions on their site.

Thanks for the info. i'll have to take a look at the tide charts and see what that looks like. i've never planned around that before, always just gone when i could go. really enjoy it out there though, kids love it. just don't want to get myself into something i can't get back out of.
