Well I finally caught some crappie. I knew they had to be there as I've caught way too many bass fishing this spring. This was the first time I had been able to exclusively focus on them and did okay. A buddy and I caught about 25 with 11 real nice keepers (3 over 1.5 and 2 near 2). This wasn't a trip of trips but it was a nice start. I went to a spot where Monday I knew I had missed a crappie on spinnerbait and they were there. 9 of the 11 were ultra dark males. If I were guessing, the spawn has not really begun or is just starting. I don't know if I was in a staging area or a spawning area. I caught them in 6-12 feet of water on minnows and jigs. I wish I knew more to tell people where I was, but I simply don't know the lake that well yet. I was somewhere between Rock Creek and the highlines in stained water.

ketchum, sorry I didn't get this posted earlier, but it has been a busy week. We went to AH Tuesday afternoon, up Rocky Creek. Got there about 3:00 and fished to about 8:00. We ended up with 6 keepers, 2 just over 10" and the rest 12+. Lots of 8" to 9 1/2" fish. All the keepers were either males or spawned out females. I know we got a couple of big males because their tails were worn down from fanning nests. They were in 12' to 20'of water, mostly pretty deep. Caught most on minnows, but did get some on black/chartreuse maribou jigs.

I have to mention how much better the minnows we have been getting at the marina have been this year. In my last 5 trips we have probably only had 3 or 4 total die in the cooler. I appreciate the folks taking the time to keep their bait supply healthy. Sure is nice not to have 1/3 of your bait go belly up.

There is just so much cover at AH that makes it so difficult to find good concentrations of fish.

Well the crappie was not so bueno for us. We only crappie fished about 3 hours in Rocky CReek and one other spot and only had seven small ones and a bass. The good news is that we caught 9 bass right before dark and picked up 3 nice cats on a short trotline this morning. Also added a 3 pound bass on topwater. All in all a great overall trip for July...just not so good on the crappie.
