Heading down in August. Will be my first time with a yak. Any suggestions appreciated, not picky on what species I catch as I don't get to fish salt very often.

Search YouTube for Glenn Madden. He has been fishing offshore down there for a decade.

Only need a few lures to catch trout, reds, and flounder… topwater, doa shrimp, doa baitbuster (deep runner) and maybe a redfish magic spinner bait is what I always used.. I’d wait and ask someone down there what colors are working best.. even the Walmarts carry most of those if not all. 12 to 15 line to 20 to30 lb fluro leader is what I always use on baitcaster or spinning. Take lots of pictures…

OP your post is raising more questions than answers. Need more info. When you say first time with a yak are you experienced in a kayak or is this your first time period? If you’re not experienced with a kayak don’t go offshore alone. Inshore there’s Wilson’s cut, sailboat channel which leads to Brown and Root flats. Drifting Brown & Root flats can be productive. The southwest side of B&R can be the better areas. As far as lures for me I would take either a top water or wake bait (but neither of these are necessary), some gold spoons in both 1/4 & 1/2 oz and some soft plastics (your choice) rigged on 1/8 oz jig heads. If you want to use live bait finger mullet is best, cut mullet works good too. Just throw it in the sandy pot holes and let it sit.
You get out of it what you put into it!

Aransas County has sixteen kayak launch spots. No matter the wind velocity or direction, you can find a place to kayak fish. Look up Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce, and/or Tourist Info, and enter "Aransas Pathways" to see all of them and a map. They have a printed map with all the kayak launches, hiking and birding trails, they would probably mail to you. San Patricio County has five or six launches, including the famous Lighthouse Lakes Paddling Trail, the first TPWD trail, plus Brown & Root Flats across the highway, and the Aquatic Park in Aransas Pass. Your only limitation will be having enough time to see all the spots. IslandJim

Sorry for being too vague fellas, and appreciate the info. I'd call myself a kayak novice, although I've done several river trips. Just got a Ascend 12, and am getting used to it. I have no aspirations to go offshore, although I may try to paddle out into the surf past the 3rd gut, either to fish or just drop a bait further than I can cast it. I figure I'll do more in the bays, but didn't know how the extreme heat of late summer would affect the fishing in those. I'd really love to catch some flounder, and have watched a few videos on that, but as stated earlier, don't really care what I catch. I'll probably bring a cast net, but will also have a handful of lures.

If you see a guy in a stealth fisha 500 and either a viking reload or a wilderness tarpon 160 stop and have a beer. I will be sharing from land in the eve and offshore mornings till 1 or so
