For all the much more experienced anglers on here, pros/cons/preference of monofilament vs flourocarbon for tippet? Is there a reason to use one over the other? All i've ever used, even with my conventional fishing tackle, is monofilament. I've had good success, even with decent sized fish, so I'm just wondering if I need to think about adding Floro to my tippet supply.

It's been my experience that there is little difference between the two, at least for tippet use. The conventional wisdom is that fluorocarbon sinks better and is more resistant to abrasion, as well as being less visible to the fish. I haven't done any scientific testing, but I've used 12# fluorocarbon tippets (on fluorocarbon leaders) with gurglers tied on #4 hooks, and had no issues with the line sinking my little foam cricket. In random discussions with others I've not found anyone claiming a profound difference between the two when used as tippet material. I've quit buying both and just use fluorocarbon now, but I doubt I'd see any significant differences if I switched to monofilament. I suspect one would see a larger difference between brands than between types. But as I said, all of my data is anecdotal, and perhaps someone has some validated data to refute my opinion.

My experience pretty much mirrors Mr. Ford’s. I find mono slightly more forgiving when tying a knot, but it is pretty easy to learn the knots that work better (or not) with flouro.

Depends on how I’m fishing. If I’m in a river with rock fishing nymphs (which is most of what I do) I prefer fluoro . If I’m fishing still water then I’m probably just fishing nylon. It all catches fish so just use whatever you prefer.

Mono for small dry flies, fluoro for everything else.

This. Even in slightly dirty water, fluoro will majorly increase your catch rate with a wet fly or streamer, I’ve proven this through many year of experience, especially with trout streams in clearer water. Fluoro will sink a dry fly though. In trout fishing, the highest I would ever use is 4X for any application, and really the max I use for any application.

McK., you wouldn't use something like 1x or 2x with streamers?
