When marsh fishing in a kayak I tell guys to keep it simple. Less is best. You need a PFD, 360 light if on the water before daylight or after sundown, a whistle or sounding device, one maybe 2 Plano 3600 tackle boxes with gear, one maybe 2 rods, a dip net if you’re not used to landing fish in a kayak, good pair of long nose pliers, boga’s doesn’t hurt, an 8 or 10 lb dumbbell for an anchor with 10’ of paracord on it, an insulated water jug, a stringer if you want to keep fish and a paddle. You can add a ditch bag with safety stuff in it if you want. Seriously you don’t need more than that.

You get out of it what you put into it!

Get a hook setter wade and paddle map.

Personal preference but to me the further south you go the better it gets.

Not sure where you want to fish but I see you’re in Conroe? I’m not familiar at all with the upper coast fishing. All my years of fishing the salt have been Rockport/Aransas Pass area.

There’s a bunch of guys that fish upper coast from kayaks over on Texas kayak fisherman forum. You might also check that site out. Lots of good info there too.

If you want to kayak daytrip out of Conroe, try Anahuac, Pierce Marsh just before the causeway to Galveston, Freeport, (Christmas Bay, Cold Pass, Drum Bay) or East Matagorda Bay. You can access Matty from Sargent or Matagorda (pick up a beach pass at the store in Matagorda just before you cross the causeway if you plan to access the beach out of Matagorda). These are all "community holes" that will provide you with plenty of company, but they can all be productive. I would guess that with all the rain you've had, Trinity Bay's probably not in its best form right now, so Anahuac's probably not a great choice. As Pat Goff told you, the further south you go the better it gets. You might consider a few days at Goose Island State Park in Rockport (actually Lamar, about a 3 1/2 hour drive for you) with your yak; you'll be surrounded by prime kayak water. If you do Goose you should enjoy a meal at China A Buffet (about a block past Tackle Town); pig out on boiled shrimp and frog legs. The frog legs alone are worth the trip.

Google Earth is your friend when looking for productive marshes.
