Guy came in Fisherman's one stop Thurs mornin at Fork needing jack Say his boat came unhooked off the ball. Went west on 515 and it's barely off the road. Said he had safety cables hooked up but they were too long and didn't catch his boat when it came loose letting it drag on the road. Another guy stopped and we got it on the trailer jack Latchwas still shut and pin all the way thru. May want to check yalls chains or cables and make sure they not too long.

Chains are also supposed to be crossed to aid in catching hitch in this situation. Another reason I replaced the cables that came with this last rig. They were too long and impossible to cross correctly.

Wow never heard this. Thanks fishnfireman old dog learned somethin. I have a unusual boat trailer, I have been around boats for 50yrs. Never seen a trailer like this till I bought a 95 P2. When I get home & back boat in where i park, I have to pull Forward 4 ft. So I can Unlatch from truck WTH. When i took Possession I had no clue about this. Was FUN figurin that out!!!!

We call that a ball off ( I work for a company that ryhmes with yall) we have a new coupler called a magic latch that is dummy proof and locks down good on ball. I came up on a scene last month where a trailer came off and way wayy down an enbankment. I know the road well and it has two big dips where the bridge was replaced. I am thinking he was going over 80 when he hit the first one and the second one it came clean off, breaking all 3 chains. There is a reason we put stickers on the trailers saying "max speed 55" Momentum and poor loading ( heavy in front) are formula for disaster.
Crossing the chains makes a "cradle" but excessive speed is usually a factor in ball offs.
Watch it happen, make it happen, or say what the hell happened. Capt. Phil Harris F/V Cornelia Marie RIP

Two thing you need to check is the nut on the ball, my brother- in- law had one back off and the rig came off the truck and hit a bridge post on I-30. The safety chains broke because they were two small for the rig. The insurance co. gave him a hard time because of that, but that what the boat came with, when he got a lawer they settle with him.

We had ours drop because I missed the pin when I was inserting the receiver. Got about a mile from the house before it let go. Chains did their job keeping the boat attached to the truck (crossed of course).
We freaked out for a second, then came to a slow, controlled stop. Got the truck's jack out to lift the tongue far enough to engage the trailer's jack, put it all back together easily enough. Then headed home to repair the wiring that got sheared (it apparently wasn't long enough). Very minimal damage to the truck (some scratches in the bumper), and no damage to the trailer.
Re-learned a valuable lesson that day about double-checking truck/trailer connections.

How do you cross the chains when…1, I don’t have chains, I have thick, coiled stainless cables and …2. Both cables are attached to the trailer in the same location under the brake actuator. They don’t “cross”, they’d just twist. Haha.

The coiled cables become a mess under there but I'd rather have that then lose a boat.

That's what he has on his trailer is cables. You can change them out and put chains. Would if it were me. Cables were way too long
