Headed to Gulf coast / San Antonio Bay in July and curious if anyone has used their thumper in the Bay areas. We have been killing the hybrids and Sandies on Lewisville. Weird locations I don't normally fish. See them on the screen and let the thumping begin.

Curious if anyone has tried it and was it worth hauling it to the coast.

I’ve had a few people try them but no one has been super successful that I am aware of. If you are successful let me know!

Is there a salt water fish that makes the same noise while feeding, such as Stripers ?

Salt water striper for sure. I think it’s more fish that herd schools of bait and attack them underwater. That applies to many species however the size of the schools striper herd for example hundreds of thousands of 10-12” menhaden must make an incredible amount of vibration. Likely species would be tuna, redfish, bluefish etc.

If it were to work I think offshore would be the place. Cobia are real curious and will always come out to investigate. When we would fish shrimp boats or rigs we would always circle the boat and structure then just before turning off the engine we would into the motor to neutral and rev it a couple times. Had a captain show us that once and said that noise will usually bring the fish out towards the boat

Bet a thumper would work on bluefish up northeast - they have very similar schooling and aggressive feeding habits to stiper/whitebass. No clue about gulf though.

The only species of fish that make a thump sound when they are swallowing bait that I have found in my research Is the striper family. Which include hybrid stripers also. Although there is no documented data that sandbass or any other species create the same sound vibrations, it’s been proven that sandbass,catfish,crappie, and large mouth bass are attracted to the thump sound vibrations. I have customers up north who reported that walleye will be attracted to the thump in deeper water.
I have seen cobia and shark that were attracted to the thump sound. Also red snapper were somewhat attracted at times. It’s possible that redfish will be attracted because they create a clicking sound when feeding. I haven’t tested it on redfish myself yet.
Scientists discovered way back I believe it was in the 1960’s or early 70’s while conducting experiments of the effects of different sounds both pro and con, on different fish species, that stripers create a thump sound each time they swallow a bait. It has nothing to do with schooling fish or other predatory fish species. Many freshwater species recognize the sound as another fish eating so they will be attracted to that area to see what is available for them to eat.
Thankfully there are many people who are experimenting with thumping and we can all continue to become more educated about it. I learn something about it on a regular basis from many sources and hope I can continue to learn so we can all benefit from everyone’s perspective.

Yes Thumping works especially for bull reds. Just like freshwater thumping works better when it is cooler. I haven't been to the coast in several yrs but last time we went to POC we were thumping in the jetties and caught 25 box reds and somewhere around 35 bulls up to 46" . The boats around us didn't catch hardly anything.

I got to admit I love it when that happens! Only because it doesn't happen often enough
