Let me start by saying I’m a bass fisherman with absolutely no knowledge on carp/Buffalo. I am on the pursuit of trophy class largemouth and believe getting a better understanding of carp/buffalo tendencies will help me on my hunt! Any die hard carp fisherman here? I’d love to meet up and talk carp over a cup of coffee on my dime. I guess what I’m after here is learning their behavior and where they tend to stay throughout different seasons of the year. How do you guys locate them and identify they are in fact carp? I know bank fisherman will bait an area for days prior to fishing, but is there anyone here that fishes from boat, and uses electronics to find these critters? Do they bunch up in big schools? Or tend to run around in small packs similar to largemouth? Like I said I know nothing!

welcome

There are anglers on this site with a lot of information about carp and buffalo. For me the most important point is that large populations of carp and buffalo can occur in the same waters that have trophy largemouth bass. Lake Fork is a prime example. I will attempt to answer some of your questions below.

Both carp and buffalo can be seen running the shoreline from now until the winter. Carp are identified from buffalo by the presence of barbels (string like structure) on their mouth. Buffalo do not have barbels. There are exceptions, but typically carp look orange or golden in the water and buffalo look gray or black. Both carp and buffalo can be found throughout a waterbody. You will often see both jumping or rolling right in the middle of the lake. I have caught hundreds of carp from a boat, especially with a fly rod, but most people fish for them from the shore. Carp and buffalo often inhabit the same areas. They mainly spawn after bass. Both species can usually be found around marinas. There are hardcore carp and buffalo anglers that are crazy about pursuing the fish.
