In this case, the explosion is caused not from the butane igniting, but from the expansion of the gas inside the lighter as it heats up.
I'm no physicist, but I imagine it would be more likely to happen with a well used, almost empty lighter than with a full one. I believe that the butane will expand less than the other gases in the lighter.
I'll sit back and watch this post for people to rip me apart...

I carry a zippo, so no worries there. Except for "leg rash" after freshly filling the Zippo up. Experience speaking here! I carry a zippo holster on my belt, yep, been there and done that myself. It don't feel so good!!

Coff, that sounds logical to me. Believe it or not I remember something about that in science class. That was a while ago. I also have experienced the leg rash Chiz. lol

In a fire fighting training school I attended in the early 80's we were told that butane lighters had the same power as 3 sticks of dynamite. Whether the lighter has that much power is true or not, the instructor highly suggested that anyone carrying those types of lighters quit carrying them in your pocket. All you need is one hot ember getting into your bunker gear and you won't have to worry about the "boys" any more.......if you survive.

I think Coff is on the right track. The tackle box "explosion" was more than likely a "Pressure explposion" without an ignition. A CO/2 cartridge would have similar results if it were to rupture. The lighter is made of plastic components which could weaken under heat and increased pressure.
The strength of a lighter exploding would be reliant on "air mixture" and would have to be contained in something to cause strong pressure build up.
Zippo, been there done that, why does that leg burn hurt much longer than most burns??

Years ago I worked with a guy who was used a "bic" type of lighter. While driving west one afternoon he started thinking that the sun was causing it to get real warm in his car when suddenly he realized his shirt pocket was on fire.
Apparently a small spec of dirt or something had gotten trapped in his "bic" and didn't shut of the fuel supply after he lit his cigarette and he had put in back in his shirt pocket still flaming.
He said while trying to put out his flaming shirt pocket he almost ran off the road.
I guess this proves smoking can be hazardous to your health.

I even heard a story about some guy at the Avondale Shipyard down in Louisiana getting blown in half when a bit of slag from his cutting torch landed on the lighter in his shirtpocket. A guy that huts with me sometimes throws Bic lighters in the campfire. All they do is go 'poof' and make a quick flame. No explosion at all. But it's a great thing to do if you want to watch a bunch of guys move away from a fire in a hurry. Aerosol cans, however, are a different story. Never put one of those in a fire.

lol theres got to be a story behind that one!! We used to throw full BIC lighters in the campfire. That was fun! Well, in Arizona fireworks were illegal so we improvised...

I bought 2 butane lighters and put one in my pocket and the other one on the dash of my Ford truck. When I got off work that day, my windshield had 2 long cracks running out from an oval area that had a bunch cracks. I wondered what could have hit my windshield behind the wiper. When I got inside, I found pieces of the lighter that blew up. I'm just glad it didn't burn.

I'm beginning to think I should just forget about butane and stick to book matches or the old zippo. Zaspook you are mighty lucky that's all it did.

I had one blow up/come apart while lighting the bar-b-que grill.Scared the bejeeezuss out of me but no harm done.I guess I had it held upside down a little to long trying to get the old matchlight started. We now only use the long fireplace lighters.
scrape em up!!!

After reading this, I'm getting a little nervous about that fire extinguisher under my seat.
