Hey Everyone,
So I'm in Louisiana but figured this phenomenon probably hits Texas lakes the same way and wanted to see if any of yall notice it happen in the summer too.
I go out night fishing or pre-daylight fishing A LOT in the summer to beat the heat and avoid boat traffic.
More than once last year I'd be out fishing on the south end of a lake just before dawn and notice a noise that sounded like a far-off jet engine that would steadily get louder. Turns out it was a massive mosquito cloud moving across the lake towards me. I always cut my big lights and pulled my hood up before they got to me to avoid giving them a reason to linger but would still get swarmed when they finally got to me.
Was talking it over with my brother and wanted to check to see if it's a local thing here or if you guys have anything similar?
*As always, good luck out there everybody!

Yes It happens daily in Florida. LOL That's a heck of an alarm clock every day! I have a feeling it happens here a lot in the summers also but I usually fished bayous and small rivers so probably never noticed it until last year when I started night fishing the bigger lakes.

We've been invaded by Chinese Tiger mosquitos. I haven't seen a native mosquito in forever. Unlike native, these imports are active all day.

I'm skeptical, but will report back on how it does with the pre-dawn swarms when it warms up!

I lived in Beaumont when I was a kid. I remember that about 5:00 pm every day, you just had to go inside, because the skeeters were so bad for about an hour.
I'm glad there are wine drinkers in this world ..... it saves more beer for the rest of us. Hopper

Several years ago, my three boys and I were on Lake Fork in mid August. We were fishing at night. We were north of 154 and we could hear something that sounded like chain saws. As we got closer to the shore, we realized it was mosquitoes because we got swarmed. We were in two boats and had to move out farther into the lake. I grew up in deep East Texas and never experienced this. Mosquitoes were usually bad in late summer but never that bad.

There is a bug on many lakes that looks and buzzes similar to a mosquito but does not sting. They swarm and daylight and dusk.

I worked evening tour on a drilling rig in High Island in the early 60s. We would cover our nose and mouth with a bandana the mosquitos were so bad at the end of the day. When the derrick man quit, I was happy to volunteer to take his place. The mosquitos didn't get up that high.

(25 a week ago solo, 58 a few days ago with my brother!) Mosquitos haven't been too bad yet here, but the black flies (aka buffalo gnats) have been the worst I've ever seen in all my life. Think I was bitten half a dozen times in all my life before this year. Have had a dozen or more bites already. River stages here have been near-historic highs for an extended period of time so that likely has something to do with it but it's rough being outside anywhere now without completely covering up. Repellents apparently have no effect on them. I've got the thermacell and a few refills ordered for it so I'll report back in a few weeks. The mosquitos should pick up and black flies die off and I'll go t-shirt fishing one evening and see how tore up I get with the thermacell going!

Because even though they'd be all over us (to the point it was hard to breathe without getting them in your mouth) I'd only get bitten maybe once or twice.
