I have a new Diawa Tatula 100 reel that I need to pair with a rod. I am looking for a medium heavy rod with fast action. I want to buy something available at Academy Sports since I have a coupon there. I would also like to keep it in the $100-150 range. The two I was considering was either a Shimano SLX or a Dobyns Fury. Any thoughts on these rods? I do realize it mostly comes down to preference and feel. Just wondering if anyone who has used both (or a comparable rod) might comment on which they like best?

I have a few SLX rods most are medium they work well for jerk baits. I do have 1 medium heavy SLX not a big fan, kinda what Lee is saying the SLX feels a little doughy to me.
Do something different, you will be surprised what happens. 2020 Xpress H20B 115 Yamaha SHO

I have two of the Shimano Sellus rods. Both 7'1" in medium fast. Lure rating of 3/4 ounce. Rather heavy for a medium fast with most rods of the same length having a 5/8 ounce rating.
I use them as light weight catfish rigs. Daiwa Ballistic spinning reels. 3000 size.

I have several of the 1st gen SLX rods and some Fury rods, I'd say the Fury rods are worth the upgrade for bottom-feel/sensitivity.

I have always prefer the Falcon rods at that price point. I keep a Fury rod as my beater rod, farms ponds, kayak fishing etc. if it breaks, I'll pay the $50 replacement fee The Fury \ SLX rods are ok for moving baits. For me, Fury is not a great bottom bait. You should probably get one of each and decide for yourself.

I love my Dobyns rods, but I don’t like the fury line. As stated, the slx medium is a fabulous jerk bait and fluke rod, but I haven't thrown anything but a fluke on mine in years. I would look at the bucoo or even the h20 tac40.

I have several dobyns fury rods the 733 is my weightless senko, fluke rod it’s perfect at least to me. I just bought 2 falcons low riders lizard draggers will see if they are more sensitive than the fury’s. Both are great looking rods. Went to buy a couple new spinnerbait rods but bought those instead. What are y’all useing for spinnerbaits? J. D
