I've heard that Purtis Creek hasn't ben good for a while, can anyone confirm? I did a search and found some older reports saying it was ruined in the 90's, is it still bad? I used to fish it around '04 and it was decent.

Clay, here’s a good Purtis Creek story from the late 80’s. I’m 63 yrs old and have fished my whole life, mostly Oklahoma and Texas. The three biggest fish I have ever caught were caught on the same day at Purtis Creek. 10.20, 9.07, and 8.75. All three were days after spawn. What a day!

I go once a year with a glimmer of hope that the grass is making a comeback.
It’s depressingly barren like the surface of the moon with pitiful penned in areas where TPWD is trying to establish native vegetation.
I’ll fish a full day catching some decent ones on a finesse jig in the timber and crankbaits at the mouth of creeks.
Then I’ll see the backs of grass carp sashaying in the shallows and I get angry and leave.
I’m sure that every now and then someone will catch a good one out there.

I went last summer with my son. Caught two but they were nice both around 4.5 lbs. Broke off on another one. After 4 hours and only 3 bites I went to Athens. Much better
|

There’s lots of good stories of great things TPWD has done for decades for Texas bass fishing. Stockings, Florida strain bass, SAL…… But Purtis Creek is one of the most epic fails TPWD ever caused. It was great and then it wasn’t. It’s happened many places. Lake Austin, Cedar Creek…..places the hydrilla just could not be left alone. The amazing thing about Purtis Creek is it was built solely for recreation. Specifically FISHING. No water storage, no water front properties, no water skiing…..just FISHING. Dumped my tax dollars into the construction, it became a GREAT fishery and then the need to totally eradicate hydrilla turned it into a mud hole almost over night. That was many, many years ago. Ancient History!

Can't say the name Purtis Creek without a collective groan from many a north Texas fisherman 40+ years of age. Caught some really nice fish in the 90's. Was such a fun lake. Then...TPWD "managed" the grass. RIP.

FUBAR and TPWD mean the same thing. TPWD sure can breed and stock fish, but they will never grow a state or world record until they focus on habitat, unfortunately the best bass habitat is labeled an “invasive” species. If it didn’t “invade” into the wake board lakes and make a bunch of sissy’s complain they would leave it alone. But TPWD proves time and time again they don’t care to effectively manage hydrilla. Or stand up to the other organization’s that continuously spray harmful chemicals into our lakes so that hydrilla and other grass is killed.

Those triploid carp can live much longer than TPWD anticipated and eat much more than they calculated.
Wonder if nature found a way and a few of them reproduced or TPWD got duped and bought a bunch of regular grass carp at triploid prices.

has anybody tried to throw some hydrilla in purtis creek? First of all, it is illegal ...if you get caught, you have problems. More importantly the grass carp are still there so they would just eat it up.
