Spotlighting bedding fish is not fair chase. Much akin to hunting deer at night. If you have to move to that, you should not be allowed to fish at all. It is an unfair and despicable thing to do. I can see why someone would see it that way. Not sure I do. If its legal its hard for me to say its not fair chase. May not be something I would do, something that would not sit right with me personally, but I cant fault a guy for doing it if he chooses. If that use of "tech" (lights while fishing) is not fair chase then is use of FFS fair chase? I don't know the answer. I could argue it both ways. like that answer, No written law per TPWD; But a word called Ethics; some have it .A Lot don't. Growing up night fishing for sandies, Crappie and lmb would use lights/ seal beam . attract bait fish. , is it wrong ?????? [they stil gotta bite]

speaking of ethics...is it ethical to use a rod and reel? how about a boat? depthfinder? side scan? forward facing sonar?....if we are going to be really ethical,we need to go back to fishing from the bank with a handline....using a spotlight is just a better way to find and catch a fish....to a lot of people, unethical really means "that's not fair because i didn't think of it first".....

I’d still have trouble catching them.

I used to night fish on Fork usually starting on Memorial weekend most years and run all the way to the end of the year where me and a buddy night fished Monticello through December and into January. We never spotlighted or specifically bed fished but there is not doubt that some of those awesome nights those were the fish we were hammering on Spinnerbaits.

I'm not sure if they move up at night in the winter or are there all the time but bass are in 3' or less of water year round up here. I see them in the dead of winter dang near on the bank at night. I saw the fish that Edwin caught when he won the classic a few nights before he caught them.

if you practice catch and release, what's the difference?
got a friend who used a Q-beam to night fish for bedding fish on Seminole.....talked me into trying it and I did once....it was windy that night and all i saw was a bunch of alligator eyes probably hoping I'd fall out of the boat so they could eat me.........

I believe they pull a blanket up on cooler nights and that makes them harder to see in the water bed. I was wondering if you see a bass on the bed during the day, does the bass stay there through the night or do they move off and come back the next day ??

I was curious about this as well if I'd see more fish at night or if they'd be easier to see on a calm night then go back and catch them in daylight. What I noticed was that they were extremely spooky to the spotlight. And the light refraction into the water caused the fish to blend in with everything. No contrast like daylight with the sun above. That was my only trip doing it

In all honesty I have never tried spotlighting bas and probably never will. These local lakes are usually too stained from the west Texas wind to even sight fish in the day! I will say that peak hot summer time you should be fishing at night any time there’s a full moon. You don’t need a spotlight and you can throw any thing you want as long as it’s black!!!! I think the full moon is a reversed spotlight for bass!!
