I dont always bass fish....but when I do....
I throw a weightless fluke or wacky worm...However I cant seem to find a reel that I can tune good enough for a weightless presentation...I just bought a New lews BB1 that is adjusted all the way on the breaks and the cast control on the right side is tightened to the point i can feel resistance when I turn the handle and I cant stand that...from what Im seeing the breaks on the new BB1 cant be set internally anymore ...yall got any tuning tricks or reel recommendations.... Are the Daiwa Tatulas any good?

The driving force and secret desire of every bass fisherman, is to one day be a crappie fisherman............Could it be that the good Lord just smilies and looks the other way when a fisherman tells a lie?

Daiwa Tatula SV...YES they are that good. The braking system uses three portions of the reel to control the bait. I throw weightless baits on them quite a bit during the spring and we know how windy it is during the Spring here.

Spool tension...I like mine to fall at medium rate from tip to floor. Basically in my shop, I rig the rod, bait, etc. Lift rod to 1 o clock position. Push reel button and let bait fall.

Reel mag brakes...I set this to around 7/8 or whatever is middle of the dial. When windy, I will set to around 10 which is 3/4 full engaged.

The SV spool has an inertia based brake system and will aid in the cast and reduce backlashes.

One thing I've noticed, when casting weightless, any line heavier than 14lb, I lose that desired feel and castability.

A Steez CT SV will cast a weightless worm or fluke with ease. Almost impossible to overrun the spool. It’s is extremely light and the brakes are phenomenal. They simply work. They are pricey, but they are some of the worlds best reels made.

Shimano or Diawa I have a Diawa Tatula elite that I throw weight less senkos on and it’s amazing and can bomb them. My fish buddy primarily throws weightless senkos on a Shimano Curado DC and it does great also. Any high end Shimano or Diawa will do a great job. I can’t speak to the Lews. On another note the 6inch senkos cast much earlier than a 5 inch weightless.

+1 And they are easier to set up than the Shimano DC reels.

I teach people how to throw a bait caster that have issues with backlashing. With this reel, no problem. If you set it up correctly to the bait you are throwing you can make a long cast and never thumb the spool without backlashing.

SLX MGL 70 is a good reel for light baits

The reel may not be the problem or at least it may not be the only problem. The rod you use for weightless baits like senko's or wacky worms plays a big part. Also the line you use is a factor also.

Agree 100%. Need the right rod. If you ever fly fished you can relate. You have to load the rod correctly.

Has nothing to do with the reel.

Rod - Dobyn's Fury 734C; paired with a reel with almost all the brakes off. My current reel for the weightless SENKOS is a Daiwa Tatula 100. I use 12-17# fluorocarbon line (usually the 17) because I throw them a lot and into heavy cover.

I lost a combo with an Abu Garcia Revo over the side of the boat near the last main point in No-Name on Sunday. It was rigged with my wacky jig-head; so I used two of them similarly equipped and at some points I had two weightless TX Rigs on deck at all times.

With respects- believe you are using wrong reel for this application. BB1 is a great reel- but really considered a cranking reel, and/or chunk & wind. Lew's has a new reel coming our that is just for that application- light lures & presentations. Good luck.

The 99 $ lews LFS combined with a 6,10 medium shimano SLX rod is an excellent fluke combo. I use a longer rod for senko. I have a tatula sv tw paired with a dobyns sierra 733. The rod matters more than the reel. The rod has to load and unload properly on the cast. If the rod doesn't load correctly you end up have to put to much force on the cast and the spool speed is too fast at the start of the cast. I can free spool my fluke combo and cast 25 yards with very little effort. It is just a flip of the wrist and let the rod do the work. You don't have to free spool to cast well with it.

Other option and it is a good one is a nice spinning reel and rod. I throw weightless on baitcasting gear most of the time but have a nice Stradic and Loomis GLX set up that is a killer for the presentation.

See you on the lake and have a great day!
