Older Champs were notorious for bad transoms. They were made of wood coated with fiberglass. Get a small crack in the 'glass, water gets in, before you know it the transom is a spongy rotted mess. I personally know several Champ owners who had to replace their transoms

Its not hard for a fiberglass shop to repair it. If any boat is known for soft transoms its a design or manufacturing weakness. They don't have to break. Allison still advertises that they have never had a transom failure. Even though they don't build many, I've seen one that sheered the lower unit off on a stump. Another than had broken the lower unit on a oyster reef and not a hint of any damage.
Ocean boats have up to 2000 hp and 5 outboards. Don't tell me they all do it.
