An ounce of gold feels like you are buying friendship. Like one step above handing someone a brown paper bag with a stack of hundred dollar bills in it.

I would go in the direction they spend their time. It could be an everyday carry pistol, an AR, a night scope, a shotgun, a fly rod or even golf clubs.

Where can you go for two grand to make the memories last a lifetime?
We have had some memorable trips that I think of from time to time. Depending on whether they travel or not that could be a good choice.

Another possibility depends on their saving habits. If they don't invest in stocks much you could choose your best stock and buy them 2k of it. Buying stock can be contagious.

My initial thought is to get each an ounce of gold and tell them their friendship is worth its weight in gold or something like that. I want it to be something they can keep and that will last. I don't for instance, want to get them a rare bottle of bourbon which would get drank up and be gone. Any gift ideas that would make great heirlooms or something they'd be proud to own and remind them of the time they helped a buddy out in a time of need? What would you want?

I'd want the bourbon.

One of the guys has been a best friend for 30+ years, the other 15+, so I don't think they'd view it as buying friendship. But I hear where you are coming from which is why I'm soliciting ideas and feedback.

My best friend is part Native American and is really into Native American history, so I got him a roll of custom engraved 1oz %99.99 pure silver coins with Sitting Bull on the front and an image of the encampment at Bull Run on the back for his birthday.
That was over 20 years ago and he still talks about them today. Maybe think of something they are interested in and could possibly pass down to their sons or daughters.

Are your two friends friends with each other? If so, take them on fishing trip to Mexico (or any other place cool). All expenses paid. The memories will last forever and you can give them both nicely framed pictures of the trip down there to remind them of it.

They know and get along with each other just fine. This or some version of it is a good idea as well. It's in consideration.

Risking the wrath.... Best present I ever gave my mother for mother's day was a rose bush. She thinks of me every time she walks out her door. I know rose bushes may not be the answer but a red oak or another tree may be.

The best present I ever received was a hand signed invitation to the Whitehouse for a Christmas Party from Nancy and Ronald Regan a friend found at an estate sale. It is framed in my office as I type. Needless to say, I am a huge Ronald Regan fan and my eyes watered when they gave it to me.

Some blow and a Ho. Maybe some of those raspberry Girl Scout cookies.
Or maybe a ride with Hop in his boat that way they can have a new appreciation for life.

What I did for Groomsmen at my wedding was custom engraved knives. They really liked them and a few have them on display. A few are like me and carry daily and put them to use.
