Still don't understand why a small hatchery hasn't been started to be built yet at Ivie, How many more years do you need to prove this lake produces giants.

For the record, all 23 Legacy-class fish over 13# from last season were released alive back into the lakes they originated How long were they in captivity by TPWD? Delayed mortality is a real thing and even a post above mentions TPWD’s concern over a fish in bad shape. I doubt anyone would seriously argue against the damage done to these fish by barotrauma. Long enough to be hauled back to Athens, placed in a holding tank for several weeks to spawn, recover from spawn, and hauled back to Ivie. Usually about 3 months. So I’m guessing barotrauma is being treated somehow. If fizzing is the treatment it would appear that it is working if they live in captivity for 3 months. I guess Texas could be different but at 17’ deep in highland reservoirs you will get fish with barotrauma. It’s my understanding these fish are being caught much deeper than that. It doesn’t just disappear on its own unless fish is almost immediately released. The biologists working the program and taking care of these fish know a bit more about treating their injuries and condition than any of us.

All of the pressure on Ivie is not new. Ten or so years ago, Falcon was the hottest lake on the planet. I saw guys with coolers full of filleted 10+ bass. (Many out of state license plates.) Toledo Bend was the top lake a few years go too.
The fishing pressure was insane and then the lakes crashed.
It takes awhile for those lakes to rebound. It will happen over and over again.
But can you fault a guy who has never caught a 10 not wanting to roll the dice and go to Ivie now?

The biologists working the program and taking care of these fish know a bit more about treating their injuries and condition than any of us. Of course they do. Likely some of the best in the country. Which is exactly why a lot of my research on delayed mortality came from TPWD’s own studies. Most of that is from tournaments though and not deep caught fish, also focuses more on water temperatures rather than barotrauma. Just interested in their 100% live release results in the most susceptible (big fish) class of fish that almost certainly suffered barotrauma. That is of course if we are to believe the claimed depth of catch.Smothering due to oxygen levels/water temps is no different than smothering due to over inflation of air bladder after all.

Apparently, survival rate is quite good for these deep fish that have a knowlegable fizzer at the helm. Even Josh said those fish being pulled from 40-60ft pretty much doesn’t stand a chance. Oh well, a few will die. I don’t like that. But there’s giants all over the lake if you know what you’re looking for…..evolution!

That’s why I was interested in how long these fish were held in captivity, looks like it is long enough where delayed mortality isn’t an issue.

Is there any data or info about that-at what depth big fish basically just don’t survive? 30ft? 40ft plus? 60plus?

Those fish didn't die because of me. I fished there and never got a bite. I guess we could've ran over a few of 'em with the boat.

Still don't understand why a small hatchery hasn't been started to be built yet at Ivie, How many more years do you need to prove this lake produces giants. Seems like spending at least several hundred thousands of dollars at a mi i.um to save a handful of bass would be excessive.

The state would spend 50 mill......
