Have yall seen it when the mullet are goin around the jetties and the redfish are everywhere? I see these guys catch their limit in 10 minutes on mullet. I throw a mullet out there and all I catch is a few lousy spanish macks. They said I was using the wrong rig. They had a three way swivell with a hook on one side and float on the other. If any of yall have any advice it would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks

What kind of rig were you using, to have that kind of luck?

I like to use a 2/0 Kahle hook and put just enough split shot about 6" above the mullet so that it will not be able to swim on the surface. I cast near the rocks and fish it slowly, almost like worm fishing for bass.

Sounds like the perfect rig-up there Skeeter...

Oh, and by the way, Spanish mackerel has always been in my top-5 favorite fish to eat, so long as you bleed them after you catch them, and preferably keep them on ice afterwards.

Use a fishfinder/carolina rig with a 1/4-1/2oz egg sinker(depending on current). The reds feed uder the SP Macks "usually". If you are catching macks, trget them with a silver Johnson sprite spoon and a 6" wire leader they are a blast (good eating to if you bleed them as fihhead already said).

The rig is good, maybe the size of the bait.

I used to cut their tail off then hold them vertical for a bit. since I've been in Alaska though, I've learned to slit a fish's throat, so to speak, where you cut the main gill just inside the gill plate. If you do that while they're alive, they will pump their own blood out.

Guess if I were going to try a first time trip, would go to the end of the jetty, south side, out about 50 yards on an outgoing tide and try that. The fish should be close to the end of the rocks looking for bait to come out and head around the end of the rocks. Would try setting out a bottom rig with cut mullet and cast a popping cork with live thrown to the inside and let the tide bring it out and around. Got to be close enough to make the cast, but not so close so when the tide turns to put you in the rocks. JMPO of course.

thumb That is exactly how it is done!! The fish will kick and squirm and in the process it will bleed itself to death. There is a main artery there.

Thanks Ken.
When I get about 50 yards out can I anchor and how deep is it there. The out going tide is that a low tide and where can I find When the tide is high or low. Is the south jetty the one that is free on the beach side or the one you pay for to go across. Thanks Again LP3..
