Fished Fayette a few days ago with my son. I've only been once or twice since my parents moved from LaGrange 10 years ago, with mixed results, but this trip was just like I remembered it. Water temps ranged from 64-70, lake looked to be a little low but the water clarity was good.
We started about 1pm with a spilt shot rigged cotton candy zoom worm and a gold black trap. Our first pass we caught 5-6 fish in the 2-3lbs class in scattered hydrilla in 2-6'. We moved to the other side of the cove and caught several more with a few 3-4 lbs fish on 100 series Bandit cranks in shad colors. Things slowed down for about 30 minutes so we moved to a different cove. Once we got about half way back I picked up the trap and tossed my son a green pumpkin jackhammer with a zoom speed craw trailer and it was on! We caught fish for 3 hours almost non stop, with several doubles with a lot of fish being in the 4-5 lbs class. At one point I had to stop and repair my trap because one of the hooks got mangled. I was ripping the trap out of the hydrilla and my son was fishing the jackhammer over the top of it in 2-4'. We stayed there until dark thirty and left them biting. I would guess we caught 35-40 bass.
I never saw anyone cast netting, but there was a group of guys that fit the description at the ramp working on a broken down boat with no rods and several 5 gallon buckets on board.
Great day on the lake. They bit just about everything we tried except topwater baits.
Good time to take a kid fishing right now.

How are the ramps? Steep, slick, easy with two wheel drive? Never been there, what ramp did you use? Thanks

I think both ramps are fine, but a guy did lose it about a week ago & his truck ended up totally submerged...you can see pics & comments at the Lake Fayette Fishing facebook site...I use the Oak Thicket ramp & that's the one where the guy said he just "slid" in ? I launch here 52 times a year & have never had an issue. I do have 4wd, but seldom use it...

We used the Oak Thicket ramp. It's shorter and less steep.

Had a rough day on Fayette today. Wind was tough and only caught a few up til 11A. Then something that I have never done. While going through the trees and stumps at three fingers I hit a stump and off the front deck I flew. I have came close in the past but I guess this one caught me by surprise. There were two other buddies in the boat and I quickly got back in but I only had a towel and no change of clothes. Be careful out there guys and do not become lackadaisical like I did today and always have that change of clothes. No harm no foul but I should of been more aware of where I was at and happy it was Fayette because the water was warmer that most.

A nice double on the trap and jackhammer.
Not too hard to figure out where we were. LOL

Sorry to hear about your spill Todd. Glad your ok. I noticed a lot of timber that was standing when I used to fish the lake regularly is now submerged. A lot are now stumps just under the waterline. I always bring a change of warm clothes this time of year. Haven't fell in yet, but you never know. Had a couple of close calls as well.
Good Luck,
JP

I use Oak Thicket and it has given me no problem with a two wheel drive Chevy pickup. Throttle control is the key to any ramp. I used to use Park Prairie but ir is too shallow of angle and I had to back in with my wheels in the water. After seeing a Ford pickup float off the ramp trying to launch a sailboat, I moved to Oak Thicket.

Low 70's water temp. Fish after fish in the 2 lb and up range in 3-8 foot hardwoods on a blue/silver squarebill. Open water 3-8 ft caught lots on lipless search bait. The faster and more erratic the retrieve the better. Lots of males in reeds using a blinged fluke.
Incredible lake and the fattest bass in Texas. Every time I come I am amazed at how good this lake is and how healthy and strong the bass are!!
